Bit of the Irish

2004_03_clover.jpg

The St. Patrick's Day Parade is starting its slushy journey up Fifth Avenue (without gays), but most people are thinking about how the day is a free ticket to drink at 10AM. Gawker has suggestions on what to do this drinky holiday ("Most important: don't even go near McSorley's on 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd. Definitely avoid the lecherous leprechauns on parade up Fifth Avenue."). Gothamist might be sticking with the boring yet shoe-grateful (the shoes, they don't like stepping in pools of vomit) option of staying at home. If you're the same, director Jim Sheridan has some Irish movie suggestions: The Crying Game, Man of Aran, The Quiet Man, and The Commitments. A few Irish-themed movies we like: The Secret of Roan Inish (yes, it might put you to sleep, but it's so sweet) and Blood Sunday.

Related: Listen to a .wav (scrolle to Ralph) of Ralph Wiggum saying, "The leprachaun told me to burn things!" and check out other Irish references on The Simpsons.

I work on 5th but Im not walking down to 86th street to hear bagpipes and cheer on marching Bozos. (Don't I sound Festive?)
This parade is obviously a fake since no Irishman is up before 11am

More fun Irish movies:

- I Went Down (offbeat road movie)
- Excalibur (shot at Powerscourt Castle, outside Dublin -- look for young Liam Neeson & other cameos -- so bad it's hilarious)
- The Snapper (much funnier than The Commitments)
- Widow's Peak (comic whodunnit)
- The Butcher Boy (creepy & brilliant)
- The Field (Shakespearean tragedy)

lol I heard. My Friend from Tokyo Brought me back the Tokyo Notice Board Weekly Paper last week and it had all kinds of events listed for St Pats. They had their parade on the 14th.
Does Japan even have an Irish Population??? They seem to be doing it just for kicks.

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I would second the recomendation of I Went Down. I haven't seen the movie version of The Butcher Boy, but the book was pretty good.
