NYU Student's Midtown Suicide

The strange and tragic death of a young woman this past weekend in Midtown turns out to be another NYU suicide. The Post reported about 19 year-old Diana Chien falling from the 24th floor roof of 990 Sixth Avenue (between 36th and 37th Streets) hours after fight with her boyfriend. A man living in a neighboring building had been looking out his telescope, saw Chien on the roof, and called police. Chien had been dangling from the roof for a few minutes, but then fell. Passers-by noted the impact ("It sounded like two cars hitting each other at 30 mph. She bounced once.") and a Post photographer had been on the scene ("I'm a big fan of movies, and in the movies someone always gets that jumper to get back in. Part of you thinks it's not going to happen and then the unreal happens - she fell."). A letter from NYU confirmed Chien as a student from California; student affairs VP Marc Wais urges students to go to counseling.

There have been many suicides at NYU since the start of the school year.

Another NYU suicide. I thought we were done writing about these tragedies involving NYU students. Suicides always are hard to deal with, but when it happens within your community it is that much harder.

NYUview.com is covering this latest suicide here:

yep- this is sad- but occasionally you get these weird patterns for no reason at all. in my junior and senior years at columbia, at least three people killed themselves each year, and there were two murders, and one murder suicide the year after we graduated. so, as a current NYU student, i hesitate to draw any conclusions.

Is the issue pressure imposed by the institution (NYU, Columbia or, in my case, Cornell)or---more likely---pressure imposed by parents? Too many kids crack under the pressure of trying to live up to parents' expectations, of trying to be what they aren't (pre-med, pre-law, etc.)

The story reports that Diana had just had a fight with her boyfriend....not to diminish the impact of pressure from school and parents, but sometimes those first quasi-adult romantic relationships outside the family nest can be really harsh.

I doubt any of these truly have anything to do with the institution.

There are so many students at NYU it is bound to happen.

I think it's just strange that NYU doesn't have much deaths, and suddenly this year, we've got 3. Altho I heard rumors that 2 of the 3 previous deaths from last semester had drugs involved, I still think it's strange that all this happened w/in such a short span of time. Even if it's said that Chien jumped after a quarrel w/ her bf, I don't think this is what her suicide's all about. It's prolly what just finally drove her over the edge. As for Melissa Kennedy (who, coincidently, I knew from junior high), I was hoping she just ran away and nothing actually happened to her. Altho I hoped this, I wasn't expecting it to be true...but it was! Thank god for that, but now I feel mad at her for making everyone worry like that.

Don't presume anything. Nobody knew exactley what was going through her head. It could have been many things brought together at that one moment.I was a good friend of hers. I don't know why this happened but all we can all do now is to pray for her and her family and to cherish the memories we had with her.

Sad to hear the 4th one in six months.

What on earth was that guy doing with a telescope, stalking women across the street? I find that more creepy than the suicide.

I knew Diana.. I went to school with her back in California before she transferred. She didnt tell anyone at UCLA that she left for NYU, and just 4 days after I realize, "Hey I haven't seen her at all this year", I get this news. I can't believe it. What a tragedy.

well not to sound harsh but anyone willing to kill herself over problems with a possibly worthless b/f probably deserves to die anyway. here in new york we have enough other problems to worry about, like another 9/11, AIDS, homeless, rising crime rate, obscene housing prices...

I think that it is very sad how easy it is to jump off the roof of your school! Common sense would help to figure out a way to make it harder to get up there in the first place. Maybe lock the doors so that no one without a key could get up there!

NJ resident, Juilet Hoilett, displayed proper concern for her daughter and her car.

I'm glad the Post man got his picture.

you all are heartless... saying such things. wait until it hits closer to home for you. maybe a close loved one, maybe even you... then you might not brush off pain so easily, i think. i pray for her family and friends.

agreed. I didn't know her, but heard of this through friends of her's @ UCLA. Some of you guys are just plain asses...

Let her rest in peace...

I'm also from california. I empathize with Diana. I'm sure the fight with her boyfriend was very difficult but I think what made her commit suicide might be loneliness and pressure from being here in the city and attending nyu. We need to wake up here! People on campus blame and judge these tragic deaths on the individuals... that they were too ignorant to simply end there life. But do they know how it really feels to be far away from your family and being so young trying to survive in one of the most harsh places to live... we need to be more aware and caring of those people around us.. I'm also trying to start a peer advising/support group on campus because nyu lacks resources for students to go to, and maybe that may help at least one person to not resort to committing suicide. It's much easier to talk to someone your age. however, all of the people I have consulted with (prof. counselors, comm ppl) are skeptical about my idea! Just because they think the plan might not fall through! It saddens me how people on campus neglect these tragedies just because it's none of their business...and I'm starting to feel ashamed to be a part of nyu

I'm her cousin and Diana was a happy, beautiful girl until she met that person. Anyone who knew her at all could have told you that. She didn't deserve to die, dr_nyu, and I'm impressed that you have the bloody arrogance to make statements like that. What she deserved was a normal boyfriend, not an abusive, immature psycho who made up for his insecurities by controlling and manipulating a young girl. I learned only two things from Diana's death--how selfish it is not to think of the people who love you when you kill yourself, and that you should never believe what you read in the press.

I know it's hard to remember--I never do, when it's not my own family involved. But please be respectful. Diana wasn't a statistic, she was a girl, and you all didn't know anything about her. Apparently, neither did I.

Got anything else to say? My xanga's Yakutadazu. I'm not giving out my e-mail address.

March 9, Jack blamed the economy on the death of a girl, which is a crock and shows how BRAINWASHED University students are. This young lady was more than likely VERY loved and WELL taken care of by her family in California and was more than likely oblivious to the economy. As a father of 2 girls I am learing one thing and that is to teach them to not be dependent on men, NOT start a relationship with men until they have completed their education and most of all dont let the Educational system brainwash you into looking selfishly at yourself ONLY, especially considering that we have experienced 3 of the most prosperous business quarters in about 20 years.

Hey Candice, remember me? John, April's son. I have known Diana for as long as I could remember. Our parents are best friends and we did everything together, we went on vacations, trick or treating, movies and much more. I don't have a sister, and I consider her to be one; she even called me brother. I have always admired her very much, she was so beautiful, mature, smart, and popular. She doesn't deserve to die in New York. I do blame the boyfriend for her death, it just pains me to see Diana's mom and the boyfriend Chris holding hands coming back from the airport on Monday.
But the good news is that Diana's Mom has finally come to her sense, and told Chris to go away and never come back after the funeral. I can't believe what he did the days after the Tragedy, instead of mourning for Diana, he was out playing cards, video computer, socializing, and selling his "love story" to the press while sleeping in Diana's bedroom in her parents' house! I know he maniputated Diana because he knew she was rich, he realize that he couldn't keep her for long, so he forbid her to talk to anyone or have any friends guys or girls. What kind of boyfriend is that, what kind of relationship is that?
Diana doesn't love Chris anymore, anyone could see that, why do you think she jumped when Chris was calling to her? Obviously, I couldn't get any sleep tonight, toworrow is her funeral. Diana had such a bright future, her death hasn't really register for me yet, but maybe it will toworrow at the funeral.

This sucide had nothing to do with shit like economy and stuff like that, when she went to UCLA she used to live in my building, and everynite she would be on the phone yelling, this girl was not emotionally stable, but i never thougth it would ever lead to this.

This was a very sad event that happened. I lived on the same floor with diana at ucla. I heard the couple fighting numerous times late at night. I think her tragic death was due to her relationship and not NYU. It seems as though people are just hot to blame NYU for another tragic death. Either way this was a very unfortunate tragedy and I wish the best for her family and friends

user-pic

was this the beginning of this school year?? because i do believe she didn't meet chris until this past summer ...

user-pic

yeah, i think she transferred just this spring semester. also, i also got it confirmed from others that they had met just this past summer so their relationship was not even a year old! that makes it what somewhere under a 9 month relationship before he claims to have proposed, and less than a year of knowing chris drove her to this tragedy. he definitely has that kind of horrible affect on people.

3 words explain her death Lambda Phi Epsilon frat members. All of them are twisted wannabe gangsters and players in college...just like poser Christopher Lam.

Case in point...check out this link of hardcore Lambda Phi gangsters throwing up their gang signs...
