Mark Green Steps Out of 2005 Mayoral Race

Former Public Advocate Mark Green has officially decided not to run again for mayor in 2005. NY1 reports Green is contemplating a run for attorney general, if current Attorney General Eliot Spitzer runs against Governor Pataki as expected. Green says, "I'd consider it, because the issue would be who could best continue Eliot Spitzer's record of advocacy for consumers, workers and shareholders, and that's what I've done my whole life." Before the 2001 Democratic Primary, Gothamist spoke to a Mark Green campaign staffer who said, "Things look good [for Green's run for mayor] barring a disaster." That was September 10, 2001; the primary on September 11 was postponed and the race changed in an instant.

NY1 helpfully notes who is interested in running for public office. Interested in running for attorney general: Assemblymen Jeffrey Klein of the Bronx, Michael Gianaris of Queens and Richard Brodsky of Westchester. Interested in running for NYC mayor: Former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, City Comptroller Bill Thompson, Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields and Congressman Anthony Weiner. And the Mayor, of course.
