Recycle Again

It's no April's Fool - on April 1, recycling your glass jars and bottles, metal cans, aluminum foil, and plastic bottles and jugs is BACK, baby. Mixed paper and cardboard is also still recycled. You can see the flyer (PDF) the Departmen of Sanitation is including in newspapers next month. While the DoS foresees some confusion, they are confident New Yorkers will embrace being able to recycle everything. Recycling had been suspended to save money (glass for two years and plastic and metal for one year) but now the DoS has 410 new employees to help.

Check when your garbage is picked up in your neighborhood. The city has suggestions on how you can reuse stuff; these are mainly inanimate objects, not like boyfriends or friends or identities. Information on how to get rid of things like air-conditioners or computer (which are classified as regular bulk) in NYC. Check out the National Recycling Coalition.

As much as I hated it when the city stopped recycling, it made financial sense for the city to stop recycling when it cost too much. Bloomberg stated that he expected to reinstate recycling when it was financially viable, and part of that happened last year. I'll be glad to see "full" recycling return, though as much as we all like to pick on New Jersey, they actually accept _all_ plastic for recycling. Not just type 1 and 2 plastics.

One more thing to note - that the city doesn't recycle doesn't mean you're out of options. "We Can" was still running recycling operations after the city had stopped. My apartment building participated in it, so we were able to maintain full recycling.

A Google search reveals some odd information about We Can. Here are two links: http://www.enter.net/~eboy123/wecan/polhemus.htm, http://manhattancb4.org/agendas/2003_05/letters03may.htm#Item19.

    Ah well.

  • what a stupid thing to have done in the first place. I just loved having to explain from my bumpkin friends from Lousiana that we don't recycle glass and have them mock what an "advanced" city we live in. now only if the government properly reused what they recycled..

  • ugh, i can't wait for this! i've been feeling terrible throwing away glass jars. it drives me crazy i could recycle almost anything when i lived in texas, but not here. TEXAS!
