Gawker notes that The Kicker is no more over at New York magazine's website, NYMetro.com. Instead when you click on The Kicker's URL, you are asked to rate restaurants, bars, and stores. Perhaps due to the new Era of Moss at New York, it's a sign that blogs, while useful and sometimes powerful, are maybe not as critical as once thought for traditional newspapers' and magazines' websites. Another issue was the fact that Elizabeth Spiers didn't post that often; she was kept busy, as she was hired as a writer, not just a blogger, working on stories. Blogs do keep debates healthy and lively, so it'll be interesting to see how other publications try to meet make blogs work (if they even try) within their scopes.
Fittingly, the cover story for New York is Are You Bipolar?
Update 1:27pm: Liz is saying that it's technical difficulties- that's what Gothamist gets for using Choire as an authoratative source!

the odd thing is that the kicker is still linked under the columnists and in the left bar on the front page- so maybe it's just a temporary thing. but if it is gone for good, then i wonder if liz made the right mistake leaving gawker for new york magazine. certainly her visibility has gone down, and choire's has skyrocketed- but if you want to be a writer or journalist, it still could have been the right choice. opinions?
I never got the fuss over Elizabeth Spiers. She wasn't bad, but there is only so much about the Vanity Fair cafeteria that you can take.
Choire Sicha has actually been more unpredictable, and entertaining. Thank god she left!
I agree with Joe. As I just emailed Choire, I became nonplussed with Spiers' erratic rantings.
Would it be going too far to say she pulled a David Caruso (by leaving Gawker)? Ergo, Choire is my Jimmy Smits, Rick(y) Schroeder, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar rolled into one.
Let's not do this again.
As you are soliciting opinions, the really odd thing Jake and Jen is why you didn’t contact Elizabeth first for verification before posting this. You have always seemed very concerned with the “Journalistic Standards” of others when, again, you have demonstrated none yourself. It might not be so embarressing for you then when you get it wrong.
we're also quick to admit our mistakes- i posted liz's link. but we don't know the meaning of the word "embarressing."
It's true, we should have contacted Liz for the facts. Unfortunately, as we rushed to post and only took Gawker at its word as well as a quick check to see if we could read the site, our 1 + 1 = -1. Apologies.
Jake, she does 45 minutes in spin class like 15 times a week. And she has really sharp little nails. Walk away.
Four things:
1) I'm an idiot.
2) Jake is a bigger idiot.
3) We were wrong - we're sorry!
4) I'm shutting down comments for the sake of my ulcer.
