Did anyone else notice in the pre-show how amazingly, horribly disgusted Sofia Coppola looked as she had to endure the cheesy, marionette interview of Maria Menounos? Best moment of the night, I tell ya... Oh and besides Charlize Theron, that blond bombshell that stood escort to the winners kept the show interesting.

Methinks Gothamist needs a TiVo so that Gothamist dosn't need to watch this in real time. I started watching about an hour in and caught up to real time by the time it was over. Unfortunately, the TiVo remote still can't fast forward into the future. I would have been out of there by 10:05.

yeah i cannot believe the Oscars went over 5 hours?!! that's damn crazy...and they saved the best 3 awards for the last 5 minutes? what's with that? if the awards can do the technical awards all in a separate show, why not add some more of the boring showcases there and just have the main Oscars show last 1-2 hours?! i think johnny depp looked hot! didnt care for any of the awards really, too bad LOTR swept! am i the only one who doesnt really like that they're so...proud of themselves?! ergh! at least we wont have to hear from them anymore...

Nicole Kidman's fashion sense is on a similar trajectory with her ability to use her face to emote. Nasty award show dresses, phoned in performances, a paralyzed face and a weird Scientologist ex-husband have turned her into a parody of herself. You can't go back to credible risky acting when you're so consumed with managing the evil corporate brand you've become. Just kind of talking from personal experience here... But I agree with Jen's relative? as far as the window dressing analysis. NK's Golden Globes dress was similarly nasty but more garish, weird netting over her bony sternum and icky headband. And fuck those fuckin Coppola/Schwartzman's. The Hollywood nepotism last night was excruciating. Angelina Jolie, Liv Tyler, Sofia Coppola, Nic Cage, the Schwartzman's etc. Could Sofia have any less charisma? How many times have you heard her say, "I just wanted to see Bill in a kimono?" Even he rolls his eyes every time she says it. And she's said before that Wong Kar-Wai's "In the Mood for Love" was the one film she recommended the LIT team see. Yes, she's ripping off from the best and offering up mediocrity. Congratulations, you've oversome so many obstacles, darling.

Jennifer Garner can be on my Star Trek show anytime she wants. Maybe if Bill Murray had betrayed his country and tried to prop up a despotic mass-murderer, he would have gotten the award instead of Sean Penn.

There are always a few great moments at the Oscars; you just have to wade through piles of crap to get to them. Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, Jack Black and Will Ferrell, Errol Morris ... they were terrific. Jennifer Garner should get some kind of award for actually looking interested in the shots of her at the Technical and Scientific awards.

fantastic recap, thanks! I didn't know that about Schwartzman, I guess the mole runs in the family. I'm tired of Renee and her squinty look, she shouldn't have won just for that. And I love Liv, but just keep the darn glasses on. Did Julia Robert's stylist model her after Sarah Jessica Parker? I had to do a double take once or twice to confirm who it was.

Thank you so much for the summary. I skipped the Oscars (and the Oscar parties) this year and read a book instead. Three hours of TV condensed into seven minutes of blog. My wish for next year's Oscars? Two hours + Chris Rock.

this is the first ever post on gothamist that i think requires another post to summarize it! well done- this length is worthy of a felix salmon post- or a comment by that angry guy jack. my thoughts on the oscars were simple: they sucked- i mean, they should cut the show down to the top five or six awards, and have it over in two hours. the rest can be given at some other time- like i give a fuck who the winner for animated short wants to thank- get off the fucking stage.
