150 Years Of Getting People Drunk in the East Village

New York bar institution, McSorleys, turns 150 today. One of its strengths has been how it's always open, even during the Prohibition (it sold "near beer," therefore didn't need a liquor license). Which is why its sawdust and hops atmosphere attracts throngs of New Yorkers and tourists toting their small children alike today.

Are they going to roll back to 1854 prices in honor of their 150th birthday? C'mon, McSorley's. I've got 20 cents in my pocket. Help me out.

In relation to this (or may be not at all), there's an opening Thursday at Big Cat Gallery on 2nd street off 2nd Ave from 6 to 9. All McSorley's themed prints and drawings by their resident artist, Gregory de la Haba. He'll be drinking at McSorleys all week, so he says, and doing his famous knife throwing routine when the inclination takes him.
