Gothamist loves George Steinbrenner. Why? Because he's so insanely rich, he just goes out and get the most expensive players. Yes, Alex Rodriguez is that good and the nearly completed deal is the stuff of fantasies, but let's face it, the real value is it lets the Yankees naysayers call them the "Evil Empire." And there's nothing like being envied and reviled. That's why we live in New York.

I find it interesting that Jeter is staying at short and A-Rod is moving (most likely to third), as A-Rod is a much better defensive shortstop than Jeter ever was.
I know! Jeter is captain, and his desire to win is powerful, but DJ and ARod have had beef, so who knows?

I will divulge to Jen and Jake now...I hate the Yankees, with a passion, precisely for moves like this. It's not that they're "evil" as much as it, I dunno, feels pointless to watch baseball sometimes with such lopsided economics.

Yes, the economics of the matter are crazy and make it very unbalanced for the rest of the league. I just watched Bob Costas froth at the mouth about this for a while.
That said, Gothamist's number one baseball team will be our Little League team.
First off, Jeter is no slouch. Second off, it remains to be seen whether ARod can put on
pinstripes and perform as he has before. Lots of guys are stars elsewhere (and ARod is no doubt a star) but they get to NYC and they choke. Jeter is the captain, heart and soul of the team, they will not replace him on Shortstop but if he doens't perform... he'll have to go. Jeter's about winning. He's not about personal stats. As for the beef -- I've got the inside dope that they have indeed buried the hatchet but Jeter wants ARod to see that there's more to being a Yank than ARod thinks. Should be a great season.

It's that way in just about every sport (except football, which has a very good salary cap.) Not that my team's much better about keeping the salaries small (Go Mariners!) but it just seems like New York teams have an automatic advantage in any sport that doesn't have a salary cap.

nobody remembers when the yanks were the worst team in basebal in the mid 80's to early 90's? what did all the other teams say when the yankees had all thier dynasties throught their existence? baseball , like any other sport is a business and in business you have to shell out and take risks in return. of course your gonna have some good luck here and there with low paying teams like the marlins, but thats business, you never know. hey look at the `96 yanks. so instead of whining and complaining about how the yanks get everyone,, tell your local sports teams to shell out the dough and maybe the fans might want to spend their money to see them ... thus making a profitable return like the yanks
