66

Gothamist headed down the Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Chinese-inspired restaurant, 66. The sleek Richard Meier-designed space was full of Wall Street types, beautiful people, and some people from L.A. The main dining area is separated from the kitchen by a beautiful aquarium (right), but there's a communal table that seems to have space at any time for walk-ins, which is what we were.

The menu is split up into appetizers, dim sum, entrees, and noodles/rice - much like an actual Chinese restaurant menu. Our friendly and Keanu-lookalike server took great pains to explain that the entrees were not meant for one, but would be served family-style, and the entrees would not have sides like rice - that would need to be ordered separately. Gothamist said, "So, you mean, like eating at a Chinese restaurant?" Our entrees were delicious: Lobster E-Fu noodles with green chili, complete with huge pieces of lobster meat, and the amazingly rich beef short ribs with steamed buns. While eating there is not cheap (downtown guru Lockhart Steele feels 66 is overpriced), Gothamist left full and happy (and with leftovers!) so that made the meal worth it.

You know what? I have decided I like you much more than Gawker. They are just getting nasty over there (see recent response to repsonse to use of the word "fag"). Anyway, you, Gothamist, have much better taste in food. Now, I'm going to go reheat my Szechuan bean curd from last nite and pretend it takes as good as that meal looks.

I love the idea of a large communal table for walk-ins. I've been unsuccessfully pushing the idea for years. It would be particularly handy this upcoming Saturday.

If I had my way, I would be mixing and matching ill-suited couples together all night. It would be sort of like the "extended family" tables at a wedding reception.

I've always wondered if those red banners say anything meaningful.
