For the past 128 years, the Westminster Kennel Club has been holding The Westminster Dog Show, where dogs are trotted around for judges to judge, examine, and molest. It took only an hour for the 2,500 entries to be filled by eager dog owners and breeders. New York has 246 entries, New Jersey has 178 and Connecticut 108. And did you know that there's a "Junior Showmanship" competition, where 10-18 year olds compete on their handling skills? More fun facts about the Westminster Dog Show.
The show is held at Madison Square Garden; here's information about tickets, but you can watch it on the USA Network. And the Empire State Building is purple and gold in honor of the Westminster Kennel Club today and tomorow.
Last year's winner was Ch Torum's Scarf Michael, aka Mick. And it's always a good time to watch Best in Show.

Anybody see that episode of Nova recently about dogs? It talked about how and when they were domesticated, and how there came to be so many different kinds.
Anyway, the breeders they interviewed were seriously creepy. They seemed to think of their degs as genetic tinker toys, basically presenting them and saying "look what I made! All I had to do was inbreed 3 generations of dogs."
Even if they are pampered, it's sort of a gross way to treat a living creature, y'know?

Yes, I saw that Nova! They were talking about the genetic diseases that come with inbreeding, they cut to scientists saying, "well, we can at least learn about these diseases and genetics and hopefully extrapolate the knowledge to human diseases; but seriously guys, stop with the inbreeding." Then they cut to the breeders who were saying, "Yipee, when they figure out these diseases, I can inbredd forever without fear!" It was creeeeepy.
