Some Reasons Not to Watch the Grammys

2004_02_hankhill.jpg

Eh. The Grammys are on tonight. People will be watching to see if Janet Jackson does appear and does apologize, and even though Gothamist wastes a lot of time watching awards show, we have another game plan: We will watch Fox's excellent Sunday night lineup of King of the Hill, Oliver Beene, The Simpsons, Bernie Mac, Malcolm in the Middle, and Arrested Development. Seriously, this is the best comedy lineup that any channel has. We'll tape/TiVo watch Sex and the City and Curb Your Enthusiasm for the 10PM hour. We're not actively boycotting the grammys; we just rather see what wacky hijinks Bobby Hill and Brianna get into.

If you're into the Grammys, Mary Huhn's article about how this year's nominations are hipper than usual may interest you, though the concept of hip is certainly a relative matter for the Grammys. And celebrity stylist Philip Bloch expects a lot of cleavage at this year's show, in spite of Janet Jackson. But CBS has 40 extra people on call to monitor the performance, to ready censor buttons, even though a CBS spokesperson says, "We're not going to use the technology to turn the Grammys into SpongeBob SquarePants. It will still be the Grammys." Oh, so it will still be lame? All right!

Fox's Sunday night lineup is excellent, but for the insipid "Oliver Beene." That show needs to be cancelled ASAP. I'd take reruns of "That '70's Show" over anything "Oliver Beene" related.

Dude, you're totally bugging. Prince with Beyonce! Andre 3000 with George Clinton! Pharrell trying to sing the Beatles!

Also, this cheap impostor that currently airs has a lot of nerve calling itself "The Simpsons".

Jen, you left out the best possible reason for skipping the Grammys: there was a Law & Order marathon on TNT tonight! The marathon included the episode with the best title ever, "Whose Monkey Is It Anyway," and continued with the three-parter in which Briscoe and Curtis go to LA. You even see Benjamin Bratt in his boxer shorts! And Janeane Garofalo is in it! Forget the Grammys. My heart sings another song: the song of the Law & Order interstitial gongs. Ch-Chnng!

You're right, but I jock Law and Order so much on Gothamist, I thought I should throw a bone to the underrated Fox comedies.

I do like "Whose Monkey Is It Anyway."

I would just like to add that King of the Hill is the most accurate depiction imaginable of small town Texas life. Seriously, sometimes it's hard for me to watch---it's like they channelled my family and neighbors. It's almost painful.

And Bobby is the most real of them all. Man.
