Charles McKinley, who was arrested after he shipped himself in a crate, from NY to Dallas to avoid paying airfare, has been sentenced. He has been fined "$1,500 Wednesday and sentenced to 120 days of house arrest." The Reuters story also includes critical information: McKinley, at 5'8", fit himself into a box that was 42" high, 36" wide, and 15" deep; the delivery man thought he'd delivered a corpse to McKinley's parents house when he saw McKinley's eyes. And this was for TWO days of travel.
Airfare from NY to Dallas this weekend is about $360 on Expedia which means McKinley could have made four roundtrip visits to his parents. But there's nothing like livin' and learnin'.

How is shipping yourself somewhere illegal? It's a bit stupid and probably against Fed-Ex/UPS/USPS policy, but stowing away? Nuh-uh.
I think it's the confusion of post September 11 laws and the phrase "human time bomb."
the velvet underground song "the gift" is about someone who ships himself to see his girlfriend. sadly, he is killed in the attempt:

Dude, I mentioned that Velvet Underground song in the original post about this. I hate how you always think I'm stupid just beacuse I can't spell...where's my respect!
What the hell kind of punishment is that? I regularly behave as if I'm under 120 days house arrest (sweet, sweet solitude) and sadly sometimes I look at my checking account and realize I have blown way more than $1500 on god-knows-what. Now I realize I can just start shipping myself with impunity. New Zealand, here I come!
thats gansta!
but i thought he was in trouble with the cops on outstanding something or other, not so much the shipping incident. is this true?
The question that's burning in my mind: Why didn't he get a bigger box?
Sterling,
The answer: Volume.
Just imagine how much worse the punishment would have been if he'd had an ashtray in the box with him.
This gent isn't exactly the brightest bulb in the Menhorah, but damn...
Where's FedEx's penalty?
