Eating at Kuma Inn

2004_02_kuma2.jpg

After reading raves from Below 14th and NYCEats, Gothamist decided to try Kuma Inn for ourselves. And after the visit, we are glad we did. What better than some Southeast Asian tapas, sake and Tsingtao, and a mellow environment on a dreary night? Some of our favorites were the crab cakes (above left), a grilled tuna accompanied by delicious sauces (above right), and the wasabi pork shumai (right, after Gothamist dug in). The chicken adobo was all right, but not that special. And even though the mix stix (various meats on skewers) are bland, it seems like they'd work well when paired with one of the interesting vegetable options, like the trio of salads or mushrooms. So, thanks, Lockhart and Alaina, for your suggestions.

New York magazine's Underground Gourmet on Kuma Inn, which is located at 113 Ludlow between Delancey and Rivington, 212-353-8866. It's cash only; NYC Eats wisely advises to make reservation if you're going during a busy time, but we went late on a weekday and found it easy to get a table.

I am all for supporting a small restaurant, especially a new restaurant that has been getting consistently good reviews. So with excitement, made a reservation and off we went with group of people. We of course showed up on time, and the place was half empty. We were greeted by the waitresses who were not very helpful, but the deal breaker was when despite the fact that the place was empty and we had the reservation, they decided to sit us right by the entrance of the toilet. Now this place is very narrow and literally the single toilet they have is the unisex and two feet from the table. When we asked politely to sit us elsewhere on many empty table we saw, we were told to sit or leave. Not very difficult choice. We left, and none of us, and I am telling all my friends will never go there again. Whose idea was it anyway to put the bathroom in the middle of the room and the kitchen by the entrance? Obviously they didn't design the space nor train the staff well at all. Highly recommend other many delicious restaurants.
