In one of the more interesting studio moves, Universal is going to let
American Splendor directors-writers
Shari Springer Berman and
Robert Pulcini to
write and direct the remake of the Bride of Frankenstein. According to Variety, the film will be "set in contemporary Gotham, centered on a young woman attending college. After being haunted by someone else's memories, she gradually discovers that she died and was then unnaturally brought back to life." Oscar nominated last week for American Splendor's screenplay, in choosing Berman and Pulcini, it shows studios realize that not all video music directors should have a lock on big studio pictures (McG, we're talking to you). Of course, the recent genesis of arthouse directors being given the reins for big studio projects started with
Tim Burton's successful
Batman. While
Ang Lee has been criticized for making the
Hulk too esoteric,
Sam Raimi's instincts on
Spiderman were gold, at least box office wise.
