Music During the Commute

One of the things that make a subway ride nicer, besides seeing someone give up their seat to the senior citizen or pregnant lady or person with kids, is the music. Gothamist is generally flushed and frustrated from the commute, but yesterday, a string quintet was settled at the shuttle station in Grand Central, and made not just us but others smile. When we saw them on our way home, we asked for a card but they had run out that morning. We thanked them for bringing some beauty into our commute and hope they will email us.

Music Under New York is the MTA program that lets different performers and ensemble perform in different subway stations.

Thanks for the card, Morgan! And, allison, I'm ashamed of my fellow riders. Maybe you're too bundled up for people to notice you're pregnant - sometimes I'm worried I might offend a lady who looks but is not pregnant, so I tend to err on the side of "i don't want to hurt people's feelings" and not saying anything.

    awwww...that's so nice.

btw - i'm 8 1/2 months pregant and not a single person has given up their seat for me yet. gotta love ny.

  • Business card w/crossed-out phone number = reputable.

Myself, I love the steel drum guy on the downtown 4 platform at Grand Central.

  • I saw them tonight in Grand Central by the 6 - I grabbed their card for you

I like the guy with the steel drums that plays the beginning of familiar classical songs then drops the funk on them and remixes them for those inclined to shake dat ass. Then he smoothly comes back to the original. He's got mad flava.

    you know my steez.

those strings kind of annoy me. i like the mexican ranchero musicians that are on the 1/9 the best. just my opinion

I heard Them last week and I was pretty impressed. I knew it had to be some special event or something, they were way too good to be down on their luck broke and playing for Spare Change.

And Jen I have one small request, please....PLEASE If you get in contact with any of them, ask them to perform at Penn Station's Music Area. The people waiting would enjoy it. . . . and I can't stand any more of the banging on the Drums + New Age weirdo Hippie Music they usually play. Thx

  • But what I really love are those guys that do pan-pipe covers of Simon and Garfunkel songs near the 4-5-6 entrance in Grand Central. ROCKIN'.

What happened to the gorgeous guy with the electric fiddle that used to play at the entrance to the shuttle at grand central? I loved that guy. He sounded great and he had the most awsome biceps ever!

  • They were on the shuttle platform last night and this morning. They even got enthusiastic applause last night. With luck, they will remain a regular fixture at the shuttle.

  • i'm feelin' the strings on the platforms too.

any soundtrack is nice actually, except for the steel drums at Penn.

can't deal with the steel drums...

  • Jen

I asked them to email me with their info, so hopefully they will.

  • Lisa F.

They were playing at the Shuttle platform again this morning. There's nothing more lovely and civilized than a little Mozart in the morning. If anyone has their info, please post.
