Oh, to be young and hopeful that tomorrow would be a snow day...there'd be a 3:1 ratio of marshmallow to hot chocolate right after going sledding. Sadly, the realities of needing to put bread on the table, plus the effectiveness of the subways combined with sturdy boots means Gothamist will just complain once we get to work about having to mush through the snow on our way back home.
The Times looks at NY behavior that's the on the upswing because of the weather: Grand Central's lost and found has been getting many more calls from people wondering if their hats, scarfs, and gloves are there; people using hot sauce to warm themselves up; and hanging out by the laundromat for warmth. And people are getting excited about 30 degree weather on Friday. Jesus, it's like we're in Minneapolis...a Minneapolis with no skyways and no Replacements.
An oldie, but goodie from Vogner: Snowsteria! (Gothamist mistakenly linked to Vogner's excellent Lizzie Grubman - Arlene Wuornos examination, which we wanted to save for another time...but no time like that present). And more weather from Chris Cimino and WNBC.

Yeah, why does mass transit have to ruin everything? There's no way we'll get a snow day with the trains running *underground*!
I wonder, do NYC kids ever get snow days? I mean, I grew up in the suburbs, so we could count on at the very least 3 or 4 snow days a year. But I feel like it would have to be winter weather armageddon to keep schools closed in Manhattan.
I think the sad point for me was when I looked at the weather for Minneapolis, since I'll be there this weekend, and realized the temperature will be about the same as it has been here.
I picked the best time ever to stay in NYC for a month.
Can't wait for the above freezing period.
We had a snow day at Columbia once, I think.
i had one snow day while in high school. it was my senior year. blizzard of 2000 or something like that. i think it was the first snow day since the late 70s.
Man, the Skyways in Minneapolis rock. You never have to go outside, ever!
I think my high school got a snow day once. When the school had no power.
Snow days growing up in NYC were rare, but that just made them all the more special. That was in public school. One of the even cooler things about going to private school afterwards was that many of the students made the commute in from Connecticut and New Jersey, so it didn't take much to close the school at all. I remember we had a couple of snow days a year when the weather was just perfect for going to Central Park.
Is this "Hot New York City Men" Day at Gothamist? Gifford Miller! Chris Cimino! Hell, I don't have to visit Fleshbot today. Post some photos of Aaron Bailey!
not to be rude, but.... where is the post about law & order? aren't they filming today?
