School's Closed!

snow patterns on new york city streets

The new new is freaking out about five inches of snow. And when we say freak out, Gothamist means something like the city closing schools tomorrow. In our day, school was never closed over five inches. And in our grandparents day, they'd walk four miles to school and eight miles back. Expect to see little children running around with sleds and parents wondering when the sitter will come.

The city's guide to winter preparedness.

the blizzard of 96 was the best. i was a senior in h.s. in new jersey and they declared a state of emergency. we had about 4 days off. we ran around stoned in the snow for days!

  • No, I missed the abestos situation too. Graduated Tech in '93. Man, I was jipped.

NY-ers of my generation can't really complain about the lack of snow days...doesn't anyone remember high school starting like a month late one fall, on account of all the asbestos they were removing from schools across the city?

    That was the best!

  • what we need here is a "Blizzard of '04" graphic and some theme music, preferably by John Williams or someone of that calibre. We are NYC, goddamit! Let's make this a big media thing.

I'm very scared of cab drivers who are unaccustomed to driving in snowy climes. They like to gun-it until they shoot out of the snowdrifts like careening yellow bullets. Yikes.

Storm 1996... was in college, lived off campus, got stuck at my neighbors house {a frat house, of course} they lived on the second floor of a two family house. We were literally snowed in - the snow came up too high over the door {it opened out, not in} for us to open it. I could see my house, my room ,my roommates and I could do was wave and yell out the window. But damn it was so fun!!

Jake took the picture last snow around.

The picture sort of looks like an Oreo.

  • I remember having to drive from LI to Queens a dy after the blizzard of '96. It sucked. I got lost because I couldn't see the street signs, then accidentally parked next to a hydrant (which was buried) and got a $75 ticket.

yup, blizzard of '96 at Hunter College High School - highlight was getting an extra two days to work on my english paper

these kids today are such wimps - the only way the board of ed used to close was if public transportation was down.

  • hey new york, i think i know the problem: it's that you're all twelve-year-old little girls. which is great, because i finally have someone to give this training bra to. there you go, new york city.

haha. five inches of snow and you all freak out? pffffft. pussies.

come to montreal and we'll talk. just as soon as i can.. (engine struggling) get myself out of this snowbank... (tires spinning)... just one sec... aw, tabarnac!

  • i remember the blizzard of 1996- i was a sophomore at columbia and it was winter break. the snow was coming down so hard that i couldn't leave the dorm for 3 days. i survived on ramen noodles and kaluha.

  • that's the same snow day i posted about earlier! and the same school!

    crazy!!

  • AHHHH! The prophesies are coming true! I was viciously pelted by MILLIONS of those evil little white flaky bastards tonight! Goddamn Republicans! Make them STOP!

  • That takes me back ... Stuyvesant High School ... blizzard of '96 ... first snow day in about 15 years ...

  • In all my years of schooling in NYC (pre-k to 12th grade), I never had a snow day. The only time I remember not going to school was for Hurricane Gloria and the sad part is that maybe the reason of not going to school during the hurricane was because it was on a weekend? But yeah, never had a snow day.
