Avocado theft is all the rage in California, leading the Times to call the authorities "guac cops." This look into the farming community has fantastic quotes like "When the Super Bowl comes, there is going to be thievery. People want guacamole." and makes us city folk wonder about the avocado black market. Avocado thieves usually do go to jail for their felonious ways, and Ventura County spares no expense in looking for them, with infrared goggles and heat detecting equipment in helicoptors that patrol avocado farms. But that doesn't mean farmers are sitting pretty: They plant cactuses around the farms to thwart thieves and keep watch with Rottweilers.

Some guacamole recipes on Epicurious. And Gothamist enjoys the guacamole at Rosa Mexicano as its made table/barside. Where is your favorite guacamole in the city?

Itzocan on 9th between 1st and A. It's guacalicous.
Alma in Brooklyn. Near Cobble Hill but on the other side of the BQE. I think the guac is made by the setting. Great views of Manhattan and a rooftop dinning area in good weather. Duck breast is spetacular, so is the Mole.
Guac is served in the ubiquitous 'stone' bowl like in your picture....not too smooth....not too chunky.
i agree WHOLE-HEARTEDLY. rosa mexicana is far and away the best guac.

Another great guac spot is Los Pollitos in Park Slope (Douglass St. and 5th Ave.); the brunch there is great too!
Dos Caminos, hands down.
pacifico - new mexican in cobble hills on pacific street (duh! :)) yummy and served with plantain chips!
el paso taqueria on 97th b/n madison and park. spicy! also get the 4.25 chicken burrito.
San Diego County produces half the nation's avocado, but we rarely seem to exist in the national news media. It's so bizarre. Even the fires in October had us called "Southern California".
Dos Caminos, a Mexican and Tex-Mex venue located at 475 West Broadway, has a tasty guac. that comes in 3 different spice intensities and is made fresh to order.
The best guacamole in the city is at Etats-Unis on the Upper East Side. Absolutely.
Tio Pepe in the Village has fantastic table-side-made guac. Also some damn fine mole sauce.
Haven't been there yet, but a lot of the reviews say Sueno, here in Chelsea, is "la bomba."
I'd ask you to be my guest there one night, Jen, but only if you promised not to put nachos up your nose...
mama mexico no doubt 102 and bway
