When Not to Smoke: When Mayor Bloomberg Is At the Same Bar

2004_01_markhotel.jpg

Imagine it: It's below freezing outside, and you're inside the cozy bar at The Mark Hotel. You need to smoke. The bar is full but not bustling. You ask others if they'd mind if you smoke. Most say no. Then one man says, "I don't mind but he might," and then points to Him. Yes, Mayor Bloomberg, creator of the smoking ban. Sabrina Tavernise's NY Times article about this incident says there was much joking from the mayor and the young woman who wanted to smoke, with the mayor giving her tips on quitting smoking and then buying her table drinks. Richard Medley, who tipped the woman to the Mayor's presence, said, "It was a very New York thing. It was all in very good humor." Ah, Mayor Bloomberg, you are very funny. Like when you go sledding.
