The design for the new lower Manhattan transit hub will be unveiled today, and NY1 have an exlcusive interview with designer Santiago Calatrava. He tells them:
"The lightness that you will experience in the building, the idea of rising up off the ground, the idea of the fly and the lightness and transparency bringing the light down below to the tracks, is a response of our culture to the tragedy. It is a response of hope."
Newsday reports that the design will "feature a huge, glass-and-steel entrance and will let daylight shine down 60 feet below ground to its four train platforms." The $2 billion project will also include a plaza with shops and restaurants, mechanical walkways between ferry service at the World Financial Center and other walkways that will link to the 14 subway lines.

I think what separates Calatrava from the pack is the authenticity and innocence of his work. He is a romantic, a believer in beauty. There are no in-jokes, no dark and intellectual distance, no cynical faux-naivity. He's like a character actor--he could be in every movie ever made, and he still wouldn't be overexposed. Also, I'm pretty sure Duschamp hates him for the literalness of his metaphors.
