What kind of candy is it?

Kind of reminds me of the segment in Infinite Jest where Don Gately and Gene Fackelman have their huge dilaudid / M&Ms binge.

Um, I've got one 30-lb box in my trunk and another in my storage unit, to replenish the piece. But just give the word, and I'll slip some to you.

Truth be told, it's probably only down to about 178, but even so, that's more caramel creams than I'd eat in a year on the subway platform.

Still, even if beef's not what's for dinner, you know what's for desert.

That piece is at the MomaQNS right now, as part of the Mona Hatoum-curated show. I didn't eat one though -- it was before breakfast, and I had to save room for Jackson Diner.

i really liked felix g's art- very creative. i remember when he installed this project at the met where you got to take a print of his painting- there was like a stack of like 1500 of them.

of course, if i tried to install a 30lb display of candy in the corner, i'd end up with a 35lb thompson and lots of kitty poo.

Not to quibble, but my understanding was that the piles equated the dwindling body weight of his dying partner. Although apparently he made multiple variations on the concept each with a slightly different theme or point.

Some examples, with commentary:

This seems to be people copying/co-opting an artwork by Felix Gonzalez Torres, in a way I'm sure he would have loved and appreciated. As Felix was becoming more and more ill with AIDS in the early 90s, he started installing piles of candy in the corners of galleries and collectors homes, the weight of the piles corresponding to his decreasing body weight at the time. As he gave of himself, through art, and enabled the art world to be more generous, he himself wasted away. Yet each day, the galleries where the work was displayed would replenish the candy, and his work continues to give generously, even as he has left us.
