SAG Nominees Announced

The SAG nominations have been announced, and while the usual suspects of late appear, the biggest surprise is the strong showing for The Station Agent, with Peter Dinklage and Patricia Clarkson getting lead nominations and the cast receiving an ensemble nominations. The SAGs are voted on by actors, so these are usually a pretty decent indicator of who will be nominated for the Oscars' acting categories. We would like to see Johnny Depp get an Oscar nomination for Pirates of the Caribbean (he made that film), Evan Rachel Wood and Holly Hunter both for thirteen, Naomi Watts for 21 Grams, and Keisha Castle-Hughes for Whale Rider.

In the television category, kudos to our favorite cops and lawyers for getting an ensemble acting nomination. Also, Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order SVU was nominated for lead actress in a drama. And while snubbed for a Golden Globe, our friend Justin Kirk was nominated for best actor in a TV movie for his amazing work in Angels America; Al Pacino, Jeffrey Wright, Meryl Streep, Mary-Louise Parker, and Emma Thompson were also nominated for their roles in Angels. To bring it full circle, Ben Shenkman, who also starred in Angels, played the defendant's lawyer on Law & Order last night.

The SAG Awards air February 22 on TNT; that's one week before the Oscars.

Last night's episode was one of the best L&O episode I've seen in a while: First, the visual of crazy Reghetti sitting in the bathtub clothed with an umbrella over his head. Second, Ben Shenkman was awesome, a very worthy opponent to McCoy. Third, the undercover fed, flirting with Serena; now, I hate Serena but this made her interesting. Fourth, Briscoe's Queer Eye quip. Fifth, Sam Waterston's eyebrows and twitchy right eye when he's angry.
