A robber demanding money on a 2 train slashed a passenger yesterday. And it happened at about 1PM, as the train was arriving at the West 72nd Street stop. The robber had been harrassing one rider, when other, Jeffrey Gilbert, told him to stop. The robber turned his attention to Gilbert, asking him for money and the pulled out a box cutter when Gilbert said he had none. The men scuffled, with Gilbert getting cut in the face and the attacker fleeing at West 72nd Street. Jesus, 1PM. the 2 train. The Post calls Gilbert a good samaritan, but the horrible thing is that it almost seems like it's more trouble than it's worth. Be a good samaritan, but rule of thumb: Move along when you see a box cutter.

Jake...
Totally agree with you! The only time I have been really nervous on the subway in NYC was at 2:15 p.m. when my mom & I caught the uptown train from wall st. I was terrified but had to remain totally cool and collected so my mom wouldn't worry. Yikes, those kids were completely (a) out of control and (b) depressing. The future does not look bright.
I carry a knife with me at all times and I switch cars when someone acts menacing. I recommend this knife:

Add a drop of WD-40 to the joint.
I know what you're saying about the kids. Some punk ass kid spit a spitwad into the book I was reading last night (while I sat next to a mumbling, snot drooling looney.) Which is a far cry from getting slashed with a box cutter, but I should have known what I was in for when I stepped onto a half-empty E train at 6:05 (gee, why are there so many seats available?)
The sane/insane ratio gets unbalanced on the afternoon trains while everyone's at work.
yes, it is true that a knife can be turned against you but it's also true that a knife or gun can protect you from a gruesome act. I'll stick with a knife. Working on getting a gun. You'll be psyched if I'm in the same car as you since no one will be getting hurt in that car.
