A pit bull is a pit bull unless you want give them a little PR love and call them a "New Yorkie." The Post reports on the movement to rename pitbulls "New Yorkies," because they get a bad rap for being violent. The new New York City Animal Care and Control director, Ed Boks, says, "New Yorkers, like pit bulls, are sometimes perceived as a standoffish and mean breed - but are actually 'some of the most generous and open-hearted people I've ever met.'" Clearly, Boks has not been on line at a club or gone to the Barneys sample sale. The Post also notes that San Francisco tried to rename pit bulls "St. Francis Terriers" in the 90s, as well as the fact that pit bulls score higher on animal behavior tests than even golden retrievers. Now, pit bulls can be great, but why is the pit bull qualified to be a "New Yorkie?" Boks says he's open to other suggesions; Gothamist thinks mutts are more "New Yorkie" than other dogs, but we have no suggestions for pit bulls, other than "puppy." But better we rather vicious pit bull be a New Yorkie than a rat dog.

Pit bulls try to eat my sweet sweet little pug.
I still prefer my tiger.
'new yorkie' sounds a little too forcibly cute. how about "Clinton Terriers" after local realtors' attmept to rename hell's kitchen with that more innocuous term. no, that's no good either. Bronx Poodle.
People are always saying, "Yeah, pit bulls are so sweet," and they are, until that bred-in instinct is triggered by god-knows-what and they rip your face off.
It's not the dog's fault, but that doesn't mean I want one anywhere near me. I'd never own a dog I couldn't take if they decide to go Cujo.
Pit Bulls already have another name: the American Staffordshire Terrier.
Please don't classify a breed as vicious if you know nothing about them. I don't know how many times I've been snapped at or bitten by "lap dogs", and I blame nobody but the owner. A "Pit Bull" is just like any other breed of dog, when you're not a responsible owner it will show in the dog.
The #1 family dog is also #1 on the list for food aggression, the Golden Retriever.
The #1 family dog is a lab, deeJay!
Pit bulls were bred for DOG AGGRESSION, not people aggression. The "unstable" condition of this breed in many urban environments is a direct result of irresponsible and uneducated breeding and training by criminals who have turned this once noble breed into a thug status symbol. However, responsible owners must not neglect the genuine tendency to attack other dogs, which can be culled through careful socialization training.
Hey Dave, lick my balls on a hot day. Nothing could beat coming home from a hard days work, to be greeted by the jubilant smile of my loving devoted pit.
MOE, I think you need to work on your reading comprehension, my friend. Let me rephrase: Me like pit-bull. Lot of people don't like pit-bull because bad guys give them bad name. If you good owner, you have good pit-bull. I hope I was clearer this time.
What so few people seem to realize here is a simple idiom. There are no bad dogs but there are plenty of bad dog owners. That said, yes, I am a pit bull owner and I love my dog very much. I never intended to own a pit bull but, rather, rescued mine and have since spent much time educating myself on the breed so that I can be a better pit bull owner. That said, my dog is in no way people aggressive, not in the least, she loves people. However, true to her breed she has a very high "prey drive" meaning that she will and does exhibit aggressiveness towards other animals. So although I completely trust my pit bull around my young daughter I would never take her to an off leash dog park or put her in a situation w/ other animals. This is what being a conscience pet owner is about; knowing about the breed of dog you own and being responsible and aware of your pet no matter what type it may be.
I agree with Holly. I have been a breeder of the american pit bull terrier for 13 years and never once had one of mine "turn" on me or my family. Grant you I have owned a few that would protect my family against anyone and anything. Those few I have owned I kept well confined away from strangers to prevent accidents. What really gives me a case of the red a** is the fact people are so quick to judge the pit bull as being a maneater they don't stop and look at the statistics of dog bites. Did you know the number one dog to bite children is the Cocker Spaniel? Yes, the sweet furry little cocker spaniel will bite quicker than a bulldog. The number one dog to "turn" is the Chow Chow! Amazing huh? And as far as animal agression yes about 80% of pits have animal agression and prey drive. But people instead of picking on the pit bull all the time for animal agression lets turn towards oh say the Japanese Tosa. They were specifically bred for fighting. Sure they make great pets and companions but are extremely animal agressive. Pit Bulls were originally bred for catching wild boar, not dog fighting. I can name a lot of breeds excluding the pit bull that are known for animal agressiveness and people agression starting with old faithful, the German Shepard dog going all the way down to the beloved "family pet" the cocker spaniel but that would take up a lot of room on this forum and a lot of time. I'm not bashing other breeds by no means. I'm simply stating do your homework on "Pit Bulls" before you judge them so harshly. And as for the idiot owners that intentionally let their manbiter dogs run free wether its a pit or a chihuahua...please remember this: it's not the breed's fault. It's the bad ownership.
