American Apparel NYC

American Apparel Store NYC

Did anyone else notice that the feel-good, environment-loving, Gothamist T-shirt supplying American Apparel company has opened two retail shops in New York? One is on 6th Avenue and the other is on Broadway- both in the village. If it was up to Gothamist, all of our clothes would be produced by American Apparel. There are three things we love about their gear: it is not made in sweatshops, it doesn't have obnoxious labels or designs (today we saw a girl wearing an "Anwhere but Pianos" T-shirt again... without a trace of irony!), and the cotton is soft and thin. If there is one thing that Gothamist hates, it's bulky cotton. Apparently, many other NYC designers agree, because in addition to supplying Tiny Factory, AA supplies Neighborhoodies and a bunch of other shops. Our favorite American Apparel designs? The melange M434 T-shirt (we're releasing new versions of the Gothamist T-shirt this week!) and the 4451 Baby Rib. And bajesus- has anyone noticed that American Apparel likes the busty models on its website? We have! Here and here and here and here and here.

    Hello everyone,

I'm conducting a study on American Apparel as a requirement for a PhD in Marketing at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario.

I'd like to interview customers of American Apparel for about an hour, by telephone, to find out their motivations for shopping there. I'm not affiliated with the company in any way, and the data will not be forwarded to the company.

Interviews will be recorded, but you'll be given a pseudonym so that no one will be able to identify you. I'll be asking questions like "What does it mean to wear American Apparel?" and "What makes their clothing different?". I hope to have the resulting study published in an academic journal. If you're 18 years or older and have shopped at American Apparel on a regular basis (ie. have at least 3 pieces of clothing from the store) and would like to contribute your insights, please contact me at mmatear@business.queensu.ca

    Thanks,

    Maggie

does anyone know how one goes about modeling for AA? let sme know! thanks

  • Lindsey

Wow, I really don't understand these last few comments. I also worked at AA, and did a little modeling for them too. I had many encounters with dov charney and not even one comes close to the venom spewed above.

I found him more than a little manic, totally passionate about what he does, a little crazy, amazingly generous, honest to a fault and yes, sexual.

The man has a libido, which is a crime, I know. But he was never, ever disrespectful to me or anyone else I saw. I really admired the guy, what can I say? I really liked my time there, and I liked working for Dov.

There sure seems to be this whole online campaign to discredit all the good he does, but I just have to question the integrity of such posts, as it completely flies in the face of the truth I know about him.

    nobody is perfect..

  • Past AA model

Having modeled for AA in the past, I can tell you Dov is a very lecherous man. Sure they take care of the factory workers (I applaud that), but he does treat his admin/models like shit if the girl isn't taken by him. It saddens me to see this happening and nothing be said. Everyone looks at it as a new form of feminism and bullshit like that, but alot of these girls are given jobs and put in the catalog because of past or present sexual relationships with Dov. I know of a few girls including myself that have taken our issues up with Dov only to be dismissed like it was nothing. Dov cares about pussy, not his employees. And yes, he does whip his penis out

  • Hear this

Dov Charney is a wanker who masturbates in front of a reporter while being interviewed and sexually exploits his employees. This is not a guy to be applauded.

When does he start parading his male employees around half naked and have sex with them? You guys commenting about the busty women ad for American Apparel: why don't you apply for the job of jerking off Dov? I hear it pays well.

  • Behind the Brand

    http://www.brandchannel.com/features_profile.asp?pr_id=187

    Quote:

AA’s founder Dov Charney recently said, “I think [being sweatshop-free] is a secondary appeal and I'm getting a little bored with it myself. I’m de-emphasizing it” (Los Angeles Business Journal, May 2004).

    ...

The best part of AA’s socially responsible image is that it is really just a big red herring when it comes to the brand’s success. There are numerous clothing brands that identify themselves exclusively as sweatshop free or some such thing. Two notable ones are SweatX and No Sweat, neither of which boasts anything near AA’s success. (The SweatX online store was closed “temporarily” at publication time.) It would be surprising to learn that even 25 percent of AA customers know about any sweatshop free stance.

you know, i can't believe anyone tried those shirts out on unbusty gals or gals who are busty and don't want that being the main focus of their tshirts. i would really appreciate some youth sized ungirly shirts too. not to mention their 'large' underwear is any other company's medium, at most. and the women's tshirts don't fit average sized women anyway.

sweatshop free for skinny girls and muscular boys. how revolutionary. sweatx makes sweatshop free clothes too. but they don't have the hot folk mentality to sell big.

Don't believe the hype about American Apparel - that is one sleazy company, run by the biggest liar in the industry - Dov Charney. This is a man that abuses his employees (no, not the garment workers - the creative/admin folks) by sexual harrasment, and overwork. Quick to fire and always open to entertaining promotions for females willing to star in his own personal x-rated movies. Many of his favorite such starlets now occupy positions throughout the company - thereby explaining why so many vapid young women are to be found in positions of power. Ever notice what a mess their brand is??? The deification of Dov for his enfant terrible persona has gone on quite enough - the public should know that in real life, this guy is an scumbag who will soon get his comeuppance - at the hand of the many he has crossed and wronged...
