Wal Mart Wants Brooklyn

It's not the NJ Nets moving to Atlantic Avenue, but this would spell a certain doom for certain parts of Brooklyn: Wal–Mart is considering moving to Coney Island. Unsurprisingly, community advocates are unhappy with the idea of developer Howard Bullard bringing the biggest retailer in America next to Keyspan Park, home of the beloved minor leaguers, the Brooklyn Cyclones. The executive director of a neighborhood non profit tells the Post, "I don't think Wal-Mart fits into that zoning category. Even if some people go shopping for amusement, it doesn't fit our vision." There's "amusement zoning" in New York City? Does that count certain streets with lots of bars? Is there hipster zoning, as well as stroller zoning? Gothamist loves city planning!

Brooklyn would rather have either an new hotel, sports complex (if NYC gets the 2012 Olympics) or an indoor water park. Well, who wouldn't a year round water park? Which reminds us that there's no word on the progress of the Randall's Island Aquatic Surfpark.

  • Thank God! Walmart is fantastic. New Yorkers should be so lucky. No more Dee & Dee. No more trips out to Queens to the one and only Target [vastly overrated in my estimation]. Finally a place for 88 cent soda and cheap photo developing. Now if only the plunk a Walmart in Union Square instead of more yuppie supermarkets.

  • I don't know what the status is of the surfpark, but when I was at Randall's Island over in September, they were definately doing some kind of construction on that site.
