Gothamist understands the need for advertising revenue, but this pop up ad from the New York Times website really took the cake. It seemed like a pop up ad appropriate when going to Maxim or FHM. Time to fire off a letter to new public editor, Daniel Okrent. "Dear Daniel, Love the paper, hate your ads." Granted, the ads seem to only appear after 11PM, but they're still kind of downmarket, back of Village Voice or NY Press style.
Apparently it's spyware, not the NYTimes.com, that's behind these ads. Gothamist is sorry for the rush to judgment; apparently our decision not to use a pop up blocker is at the root of this, but our pop up blocker (in our Norton package) prevents us from easy Movable Type posting. So, sorry, NYTimes.com...we will appreciate your ads from reputables advertisers like Neiman Marcus and Tiffany.
Advertising on NYTimes.com

The American edition of FHM is located at http://www.FHMUS.com . Not sure they would even accept advertising that skank-tastic.
I think that that'd be a totally appropriate ad for Gothamist. I mean, you'd have to replace the person holding the handcuffs with Jerry Orbach, the victim in the bed with a panda bear, and it would help if you gave the panda a big steaming pile of ribs from Daisy May's, but other than that, it would totally work.
is "unsensored" (in the yellowspace) a real word? or am i missing the wit/irony?
pop-up ads are so 1999.
I feel I must set the record straight here...
As someone who works in the NYTimes online ad department I can tell you that this is not one of our ad campaigns. Also, all of our popups/popunders say "From NY Times..." in the title bar. Further, this would never get approved to run off the site. We would be getting complaints left and right.
what popup ads on nytimes.com? oh i forgot, i use a modern web browser like mozilla or safari which blocks popups!
hm...are you sure that's not spyware generating those ads? adaware.com has a great free program to clean spyware off your computer.
I am a Mozilla user? What are these "pop up ads" that you speak of?
yeah- i'd be pretty surprised if the nytimes was serving those ads. but hey- i haven't seen a popup in like a million years- thank you google toolbar on IE, thank you mozilla!
hmm, with this update, we must wonder what kind of sites gothamist browses in order to get iMatchup ads with handcuffs to pop up...
you might wanna check out a peice of software Spybot search and destroy. i use on my windows box it's pretty goos at clearing the spyware out. you gotta do the online update tho it added like 2000 peices of spyware that it will remove (i am not associated withthe people that make the software, i just like it) but then again, i have 1 windows box and 2 linux box and mozilla all over da place... *end ramble here*
even though they're not the source, maybe this is what happens when you link to the NYTimes too much. a lesson for all to learn.
hmm, scares me to think what karmic-ly lurks out there for exceeding a reasonable quota of NYPost links.
don't worry, Jen. they weren't the culprit this time, but the NYTimes WAS at the heart of some very steamy victoria's secret ads last month.
i actually complained to them about after my boss saw busty half-naked chicks on my screen from across the room... he made a joke about it, but i was sort of irked 'cos i was innocently reading the Times' account of a huge fire in Brooklyn. (...maybe NYT filed both the story and the ads under "hot" in their databases... har har) ;-)
