DUMBO Doesn't Want Jehovah's Witnesses to be Neighbors

First, DUMBO says no to film and TV crews who want to shoot in the neighborhood. Now the hip/hyped area doesn't want Jehovah's Witnesses living there. According to the Post, Jehovah's Witnesses want to build a 1,000 unit residential buliding at 85 Jay Street, and have applied for city rezoning. DUMBO residents are upset because the building won't have any retail space, though it will look like a castle, have 10 to 14 stories and a underground garage. DUMBO Neighborhood Association President Nancy Webster says, "This huge parcel is going to become the heart of the neighborhood, and we don't want our heart to be a fortress."

The Jehovah's Witnesses argue that they will "bring life, pedestrian activity and security to an area that sorely needs development." Though the Witnesses have been cooperative in discussing development issues, residents also feel they are too insular as they don't "engage in arts festivals" in the 'hood. Realtors, still thinking that DUMBO will really explode (they've been saying this for years), are confident that 2,000 Jehovah's Witnesses will constitute a small percentage of residents.

if it does get built, not only will the heart be a fortress, but it will pump all the jehovah's witnesses all over the area...knocking on every door, seeking converts.

the watchtower headquarters are already there, looming over the area. so what's the big deal about one more building?

yuppies come into many a neighborhood where they aren't wanted by the current inhabitants. the watchtower headquarters have been there LONG before fulton landing became "dumbo," and i'm pretty sure no one asked the witnesses if they wanted "arts festivals" and chai tea outlets near their church. why should "dumbo" residents receive special treatment?

85 Jay Street is not about who wants who around...it's a matter of following zoning laws as they exist. The Jehovah's Witnesses have gone beyond not asking residents what they want, they are petitioning to change the law.

Jehovah's Witnesses are following the law in requesting rezoning of the area for construction. This is done all the time in construction. They will add more decor to the community.

about "long-term development" and the jehovah's hurting the possiblity of the area booming...i lived a block from DUMBO and the only thing i saw put in there in the five years i was there was hole-in-the-wall supermarket that almost never had customers...even one the most popular pizza places left that area!

The witnesses are a large part of the comunity. They do contribute to the comunity and make any place a better place. I think its ignorant to think that 2000 people who are good citzens comming into a community wouldn't be a benefit...they will buy stuff... more than offset a lack retail space why would other retailers want the competion?

Okay, first of all, the picture you are trying to use to portray Jehovah's Witnesses is completely out of context, They do not carry around clip boards. And another, why are people so cruel and abrasive these days, for the amount of people that object to the witnesses there are just as many people who accept, I personally feel that they are using their time, which could be used in maybe better ways, to help and try to console people, such as the elderly, some people need God in their life, some people need a better sense of security. I can say from experience that most JW are kind, loving, and humble individuals that would sacrifice almost anything to help out someone in need, so before you feel that your town of DUMBO will be ruined, think again, because they actually might help bring your people together. For all I know the name of your town, DUMBO, fits the people that are objecting to the Witnesses moving in perfectly. Thank You

AS FAR AS WITNESESS IS CONCERN, ONE THING THAT PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW IS THAT THEY ARE CONSUMERS JUST LIKE ANYBODY ELSE, THEY EAT, COTHE THEM SELVES, HAVE CAR, AND LIKE TO EAT IN RESTAURANTS ECT... THAT IS A GOOD THING PEOPLE OF DUMBO. PERSONALY I SAY THAT THE WITNESESS FIND A BETTER PLACE AND LIVE YOUR TOWN TO ITS INEVITABLE DEATH.
WITNESESS HAVE ALWAY BEEN PRETTY NIFTY WHEN IT COMES TO GET WHAT THEY WANT AND NEED (ALWAYN IN LEGAL AND ETHICAL WAY) SO FOR SURE THEY WILL AQUIRE THEIR PERMITS AND BUILT THERE. WHEN THEY DO, YOU PEOPL OF DUMBO SHOULD GO AND WATCH THEM WORK. THEY ARE AN EXAMPLE, NO CURSING, NO SCREAMING, CLEANIND AVERTHING UP, WHEN YOUR WOMEN PASS BY THEY WON'T CALL THEM NAMES AND TRY TO HAVE SEX WITH THEM. AND THEY WILL HAVE THEIR SHIRTS ON ALL THE TIME. SO BE THANKFUL FOR IT.
PEOPLE OF DUMBO.
