A seventeen year old boy jumped to his death from the 31st floor of the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Vincent DePeralta of Kendall Park, NJ left a suicide note on the 31st floor balcony, and crashed into an 8th floor bar at about 12:35AM. The Marriott Marquis, which has a total of 49 floors, is notable for its soaring atrium. The Marriott Marquis spokesperson told the Times "it was virtually impossible " for this to have been an accident, since there are protective grates, shaped like troughs, installed to prevent accidental falls: "If an individual is walking around on a guest floor and leans over to look down on the lobby, there is no way they could fall accidentally."
NYU is installing barriers to prevent any more suicides in their library's atrium.

The barriers have already been installed -- Bobst barriers installed [WSN].
The article has a photo, too. Very plexiglas.
As of last week, there had been 3 fatal suicides (in 6 years)from the internal atrium of the shopping center/office complex where I work. The buiding people haven't done anything to make it more difficult for people to jump over/down...
My question is, why can't these suicidal losers do it somewhere else. It's so selfish.
That hotel is so ugly, I think it makes many people want to kill themselves and others.
Good God. I stayed here this summer, and that was right at the blackout! I didn't get any good sleep, so I wouldn't have had the energy to kill myself or anyone else.
i believe things do need to be done to prevent this from happening. Vincent was a good friend of mine and i would appreciate if no one said anything bad about anyone who has committed suicide or is suicidal. It is a stage where some youngsters are at and needs to be brought to the attention of someone important. He did what he did and it is no ones business on why or how he did. The point that is being made is that everywhere is a target for suicides. You only have to have better secruity. Thank you
I was waiting to get on the elevator on the 8th floor that night when this youngster crashed through the 8th floor bar! It was very disturbing and I wish I did not have to see that. Unfortunately, you cannot prevent someone from killing themself if they have their mind set on doing it, no security railing will be good enough to hold that person back. To Kenny -- You should have been a better friend and tried to get this guy help. That may have saved his life. He was ten feet away from landing on people seated and working at the bar and he most surely would have killed someone. Now that would have been a REAL tragedy. I agree that doing that in a public place is a very selfish act, but the suicidal person is not in their right mind anyway... I couldn't sleep after witnessing that......
I too was there when that happened and I couldn't sleep for several days. My heart goes out to the family and to those affected. The Marriott Marquis must put up a net or something because it's not fair to risk the lives of others. The young man who fell, fortunately did no take another life with him. Does the Marriott understand that they are putting their guests in deadly situations?
vince went to my school...it's going to be tough come graduation time. may he rest in peace, we love you vince.
Vince was a great guy, and one of my best friends. Im sorry he's gone and there was nothing i, or anyone else could have done to help him. He will be missed in our school, he touched so many lives.
listen mr. X....it's already a tradegy, i dont think you need to make suggestions on how it would be a real tradegy, and you don't know my friend vince, or nething about him so how dare you make accusations like that...and don't ever tell ne one they should be a better friend...its not sumthing your friends can change if you heart is set on something...only vince could have changed it..and God told vince to join him...don't ever say anything bad like that again about any one who commits suicide...its not your place
Mr. X, hi. You talk a lot dont you. WHen one of your best friends does this you can call it not a serious tradegy but to our little town, it was an immense loss. I got three words if you want to continue your heartless chatter: COME SEE ME.
sam - i hope one of your friends kills themself. and X i hope your whole family kills themselves. You both are very selfish and have no idea how horrible it is to loose someone you love..
I was a friend of Vince, and all of you low life scum that are so cold hearted enough to say that we were bad friends to him you didnt know him or us he touched more people in his life then im sure any of you could in your whole life and i am sure that you never know the way his death hurt us all cause ur little heartless ass probably doesnt have any friends im sure u would love if i came and beat the hell out of u and your loved ones does that make u a bad son cause u are laying on the floor coughin up blood...
everyone shut the fuck up. all of you are complete morons. why are you starting fights over this shit? sam, amar and amit, i know you and you know me and i feel the same as you. but theres no need to come on here and start tellin people to come fight. stop being so selfish yourselves, stop creating more attention and stop trying to make people feel bad for you. this isnt about you, this is about Vince. so everybody shut the fuck up, you make me sick.
I don't think they are trying to make people feel sorry for them, they said what they said out of anger. Obviously.
new york city is full of very tall buildings -- if it wasn't the marquis it wouldda been another building just as tall... to say the marquis puts people at risk because they have a 40 story atrium is just silly fingerpointing. ;[]
Man.. I was real tight with vince freshman year.. Its a shame to lose a unique person and friend like him. I am sorry to hear about his suicide. I am sure no one expected him to do it, i know i didnt. Amit, Amar and Sammie as well as everyone in his family and his friends. I hope people will make decisions to stay sane and healthy. Also try not to be angry about it. Just keep vince in youre thoughts.
Did you know Vincent DePeralta? If so visit my site, VisionAndPsychosis.Net.
Did he own a computer? Are there any pictures of his computer installation? Look at the list near the top of my College Suicides page for the type information I want.
My site is about a conflict of human physiology I believe to be causing sudden unexplained suicides.
If you can supply information email me. Read the site to understand the problem. This is a known problem from civil engineering close-spaced workstation design. It was discovered over fifty years ago. The psychotic episodes caused by Qi Gong and Kundalini Yoga establish a 3000-year history for the phenomenon.
its been 2 yrs soon to be 3 and its been a very hard ajustment to the absence of Vincent. I've been well aware of new signs and actions that may clue an individual on possible suicidal attempts. We all wish we could of help Vince in any way possible and its everyday that i go on missing him. IN our heart u stay
