Washington Post's Tom Shales: "...thought-provoking, mind-blowing and, at times, breathtaking."
The Observer's John Heilpern: "...a bold and magnificent achievement that deserves to be seen by everyone."
The Daily News' David Bianculli: "HBO Films...has delivered a masterpiece."
John Leonard: "...not only the best television of the year but, hands down, the best movie, period."
Time's James Ponziewok: "The accomplishment of this dazzling, poetic and hopeful Angels in America is that it shows us how brave and reckless that American sentiment is, how fearsome and splendid."
NY Times's Alessandra Stanley: "Angels" is highly entertaining — closer to "Nicholas Nickleby" than "Einstein on the Beach."
Variety's Todd McCarthy: "Fully capturing the grandeur, extravagance, urgency, poetry and humor of the produced play, the savvy veteran director [Nichols]has brought out an elemental dimension of emotional melodrama that makes the piece compulsive screen fare without subtracting one bit from its status as great theater."

And we must say that we're excited to see our friend Justin Kirk getting rave notices for his portrayal of Prior Walter ("scarcely could be better," "vital, quicksilver, revelatory Prior"). Time's profile of him is amusing, noting his WB past on Jack & Jill. Though Angels was a dream job, he tells us what everyone suspects about being on the WB, "I was thrilled to be a WB hunk. It's all I've ever wanted."
A Newsweek interview with Justin, Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, Mike Nichols and Tony Kushner reveals the intricacies of adapting the play to screen.

As a Mike Nichols fan, I'll be tuned in. Thanks for the heads up.
Al I have to say is:
Mmmmmm. Emma Thompson.
It's wonderful to read this Gothamist blurb, log on to my Tivo account on the web, and send a message from my office to my Tivo to record this.
Thanks for the heads-up!
Hey, I met that Justin Kirk dude!
Um, it's John Heilpern of the Observer. Lahr wrote the New Yorker review of Kushner's new musical "Caroline or Change".
Speaking of the New Yorker, Nancy Franklin's review (http://www.newyorker.com/critics/television/?031208crte_television) is mostly positive as well.
Looking forward to Sunday night.
Thanks, Bill! I got mixed with the other Tony Kushner opening this week. Which I want to see as well.
my boss saw caroline or change - he was mixed about it as he is mixed about alot of things. he called it high class vaudeville with an excess of intelligence, which made me laugh, bec in my post http://www.1115.org/archives/cat_culture.html#000141 last night I compared Vegas to vaudeville. . . ah well, hopefully i'll score some free tix soon.
the only thing hotter than justin kirk in angels in america is watching justin kirk get a lap dance from a hot stripper at a gentleman's club in hell's kitchen- as i had the opportunity to do last night. jesus- his stony three-mile stare and her round, tender buttocks were the perfect after-dinner entertainment.
The stripper had a hot body; her face was not so hot. But Justin's stony three mile stare was pretty hot.
Caroline, or Change is amazing-- amazing-- truly jaw-droppingly-good. I have no idea why reviews are wishy washy. I've seen it twice and both times the audiences were freaking out; people left weepy and trembling. Check it out, if you can.
Time for Gothamist reviews of NYC's finer "Gentlemen's Clubs" to go along with your reviews of our finer Meat establishments?
Other than Justin Kirk's performance (which was fantastic), Angels in America was a huge disappointment.
I have 3 univrsity degrees, which include an MA in Literature - I didn't understand anything in "Angels in America" except it made Jews look ugly and latter-day saints look stupid. All these rave reviews?! Prejudice passed off as entertainment. Do we really need homosexual sex and full-frontal nudity to make our lives interesting? No thanks.
