With the premiere of the Fox reality show, The Simple Life, with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, tonight at 8:30PM, we have decided to revisit a hilarious interview that E! Online's Kristin did with the girls. It kills us because that troublemaker Norm MacDonald asked what everyone wonders, but is too PC to speculate about: Nicole Richie's skin color.
Norm: "Isn't Lionel Richie a black guy?"

First, She is adpoted but, that doesn't have anything to do with her race. Secondly, she is black. Black is defined buy the US gov. as being at least 1/16 black. third, she is biologically 1/2 half. She identifies with her blackness more because both her adopted parents are Black (Lionel and his first wife) she was raise in a black household. Fourth, ther are plenty of 100% percent blacks that are very fair and have bone straight hair, very fair with kinky hair, dark with bone straight hair, dark with kinky hair, and every combo you can think of under the sun. That's why Black is beautiful is like being part of a rainbow. She is simply an example of why judging a person by their race, and the color of their skin ignorant. If most white Americans took the time to look a little deeper in to Afican-American history you would realize the we are all a lot closer that you think, and you might just find out more about yourself. Means nothing, people who are intent on finding racism often like to harp on about the racism of the old South Africa or Nazi Germany, where you were put into an ethnic group on some variation of the one drop of blood rule. X number of Jewish ancestors makes you Jewish, even if you are a blond 6 foot 6 tall blue eyed guy who didnt even know he was Jewish. The govs 1/16 rule falls into that way of thinking.
The problem with this is that its got nothing to do with racism or bigotry as its lived in the real world right now. You are judged by the way you look and the way you act. I agree with alot of writers when they say that it doesnt matter if you are Black and white. My grandmom remember the scandel when her dad cheated and got caught. He married her mom which is white and since her dad is Black she is Black the male determines the sex of the baby and if you dont agree with that then you are stupid. The hair that everyone is so caught up on is a very very bad weave (fake hair added on), so don't think that that is what sets her apart from Black people. Okay, some of you people need to get past your racism. As if they're no pretty women that are BLACK and not mixed. Stop using Halle Berry and Alicia Keys as examples. They do identify with being black, but at the same time they don't hesitate to mention that they're bi-racial. And there are some black people who are fair and have what people wouldn't consider 'black features' but are black biologically.
You idiots keep talking about Nicole's nose. LOOK AT HER NOSE where it flares and Paris' does not. She obviously has broader nostrils. She also has full lips and that could be her real skin tone. A lot of mixed children have a "cream" skin tone to them. And ultimately a lot of black and hispanic (especially) women can get away with looking white if they start with certain features and just alter the rest.
I know a girl who's Dominican, same skin tone as Nicole...she naturally has dark brown very curly hair and in her old photos she did look like a woman of color. But she flat irons her hair now, dyes it blonde and includes skin "brighteners" in her makeup regimen. She now honestly looks like an older version of the Olsen Twins, and guys fall all over her because of that. People guess she's Italian, French, German...never hispanic. It shows how much you know.
For a black person if they do all that and also add other enhancements like color contacts, they can fool a lot of people.
Like others said, learn something about genetics before you go talking. My boyfriend's brother still thinks that every mixed person in the world has to look EXACTLY like a perfect mix of their mom and dad....it's pathetic. I have black, white and Native American blood in my family, and some of us could pass for white with a straightened blonde hair. A lot of them have green/hazel eyes as well. Most (including myself) have some features that are considered "black", but generally light-med skinned and our hair isn't that coarse, so many times people think we're hispanic or middle eastern. And there are those in my family that you would never doubt are black. But we're all related, and genetics comes into play a lot. We have dark parents with fair kids and vice versa.
I know people like Ms. Richie. A girl who's park black and part French who's fair skinned with blonde hair and hazel eyes. She says she's part black and the idiots don't believe her. Also my basketball coach who was white as hell married a dark black woman and had a son who looked just like his WIFE and NOTHING like him. People thought he was adopted too.
If you doubt genetics, let me post this question to you:
When two people of the same race have a kid, and the kid is a "spitting image" of ONE OF THE PARENTS, nobody says anything, but they acknowledge the resemblence.
Now what would the kid look like in a mixed couple if the child is a spitting image of ONE OF THE PARENTS.

Let me add my piece to the "what the hell is she" puzzle.
The moment I saw her i thought, "creepy, what the hell is she". I then did my research. Nicole was adopted when she was 9 years old, and I believe her father is a member of the Commodores. Check her out on Rock Star Daughters on E! and you'll hear the scoop. Anywhoo, this proves once and for all, SHE IS ADOPTED.
Now for what she's doing, in all honesty I do believe the poor child is "trying to pass" broken down, she'll let people believe she's white. But in the end most black people, like myself, can tell she's got at least a drop in her. For one her knees are black, I saw her in a skirt. Secondly, her hair is a DAMN MESS, weave all fuct up, you can see her real hair underneath the blonde tracks on top of her hair and that hair beneath has a coarser texture. Her face is also a little more rounded than most white people's (not saying white people don't have round faces, but look at Paris and then look at her). Finally her nostrils do flare. All in all she is someone most black people would look twice at to try and guess what she's made of, cause most of us know something else is there.
And do remember, genetics are key here, black people do come in all shapes and shades from milky white and butter yellow to the darkest chocolate goodness. Everyone should embrace the skin they're in, and if they don't want to do that, at least get a convincing weave.

I think white people are just wondering how it's possible that Nicole is black because we are unfamiliar with African American heredity. 2. I am considered by the government to be 100% White, but I have whites, natives, and blacks in my background. I just look totally white, or maybe Jewish. Doesn't change how I feel about myself.
3. If you don't know her, and aren't interested in knowing her, then you shouldn't care anything about her.
4. If you do know her, and / or want to know her, then ALL you should care about is her personality.
5. As for her money, addictions, ect. Some of these things are things we wish we had. And some are unfortunate. None of these things decide who she really is.

I saw Lionel Richies biography on VH1 not too long ago and it profiled his life with his 1st wife who has a dark complextion for a black lady. She reminds me so much Diane Carrol~ very pretty lady. They adopted Nicole when she was a little girl. Lionel wrote and sang Ballerina Girl for Nicole. I have no idea of her biological heritage and it is interesting to speculate. I assume that she does have a white biological heritage with black as well. Whatever she gene makeup, she is truly a lovely young woman.

Black people come in a range of beautiful colours. Why is that so hard to understand? Black people like Hispanics range from dark to very light. I am a very light complexioned African American with naturally green eyes and long straight honey blond hair. My husband whom is 1/4 German, 1/4 Irish, 1/4 Spanish, and 1/4 African American is darker than I am. We have 2 children; a boy and a girl. The boy has golden brown skin, hazel eyes and curly dk brown hair and the girl has creamy white skin, blue eyes, and straight blond hair. And did I mention that they are twins.
While I was a undergrad @ Cornell I took an anthropology class that was very insightful. I learned that most Americans are basically biracial and I know alot of White people don't want to believe that but here are the facts. The original White race had milky white skin, straight blond hair and blue eyes only. If you and any person in your family doesn't meet all 3 criteria then biologically you aren't 100% White. There are only two natural eye colors (brown and blue) every other color "even green" is a combination of the two. Biologically speaking there are only 2 natural races (Black and White) every other race is biologically a mixture of the two races. And as far as Black people go, all Black Americans are of a mixed race. This is why African American don't look like pure Africans from Africa. Biologically speaking, Black people are mixtures of African, European, and Native American.

I take it that you've never taken anthropology or genetic biology. As far as the Asian race goes it is a fairly new race that originated within the last few centuries. As far as my education goes I have a B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Biology from Cornell and a M.S. in Social Work from Emory University and I currently practice as a LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker). I actually met my wonderful husband my freshmen year at Cornell in a anthropology class. I later minored in Biology and he was a pre-med/biology major with a minor in psychology so we ended up taking several classes together, going to many formals and mixers and eventually fell in love and have been married for 7 years and have two beautiful children "Cameron Kyler" and "Brianna Celeste" who are the joys of our lives and a precious gift from God!

I have heard lectures in classrooms and seen documentary evidence on television stating the same facts, that factually there are only two races and that all others are mixes and that the likelihood of anyone living being either of the two is very unlikely.

I totally agree that her race in unimportant as far as who she is and how she is perceived. But, I will say, this discussion is important because it breaks down people's sterotypes of what it means to be black or white or whatever. We all are more alike than we think. I am very well-aware that Hispanic is an ethnicity group and not a racial classification. My husband is part Cuban and I also have some Creole blood (Santo Domingo and Haiti) running through my veins. Hispanics are a perfect example of racial mixture. The majority of Hispanics (Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans and Mexicans) are biologically biracial. They are mixed with European Spanish (Spain), African, and Native American. Some have more of one thing than another and this is why there is a variety in skin tones. Some Hispanics do classify themselves as White while others classify themselves as Black. Most Dominicans classify themselves as Black just due to the fact that they just simply couldn't pass for White. Most other segments of the Hispanic population usually classifies themselves as White even though many have skin tones darker than many African Americans.

It is always nice to run into fellow Cornell alumni. I attended Cornell from 1992-1996. I graduated in Spring of 1996 and I guess you started in the Fall of 1996. I loved Cornell! It was such a great time in my life. I miss the whole Cornell spirit and the crazy greek parties. I had so much fun their. I got married right after graduation and moved to Atlanta where my significant other was accepted into medical school. I completed my grad degree, started working, and had 2 kids. Either you are lying about your studies or Cornell is a university, but you were at The Cornell Institue for the Anthropologically Challenged. There are four classifications of humans. 1) Caucasoid (white), 2)Mongoloid (Asian), 3) Negroid (black) 4) Aboriginal. To say that the asian culture is only two centuries old is completely insane (ie: Peking Man?)
I never said that Asian culture is two centuries old but what I did say is that it is only a few centuries old. A couple is two not a few. I am very well aware of the classifications of humans but that has nothing to do with what I was discussing which was natural races. The Asian race is the youngest of all races.
As far as Cornell goes, it is one of the top schools in the country and they have great professors who have earned some of the highest educational honors in America! I wasn't a sociology or anthropology major but I am very self-assured in the remarks I made concerning the races. If you have a problem with that maybe you should contact the authors of several anthropology text books and researchers that have studied human existence!

I am facinated Nicolette, that you believe you studied that the Asian race is the "youngest" of all the races. In fact, I HAVE consulted several of my anthropology books and can find no evidence of this being true. Please enlighten us all as to a specific book that states this. Peking Man was 500,000 years old. That's a little older than a few centuries Nicolette (by the way, a century is 100 years in case you didn't know). Even if you look at the late Homo Sapiens in China, they lived 18,000-50,000 years ago, much more than a "few centuries" ago.

I know that the current prevailing hyphotheses is that all humans came from a single tribe of people in Africa. They all migrated to different areas and took on different characteristics based on where they lived. People who moved North didn't need as much pigment in their skin so they became lighter. So, we ALL come from African decent. So as you can see, it doesn't really make sense to say one race developed before another. We all came from the same place originally and branched out gradually. Also, it is commonly believed now that there are no biologically significant differences between the races. Why? Because as I said we all came from the same tribe originally.
The fact that we look different is because we live in different environments. But we are really, truly the same under the skin. See, we're all related if you go back far enough.

The only relevant topic in regards to races is our inability to coexist now. The bottom line is because the world is smaller in terms of communication and travel, we will increasingly become one ethnicity of color. Not purely Mongoloid, Caucasoid, Negroid, etc. You'd be hard pressed to find African-Americans who look African, for example. African-Americans are inherently a mixed race of people...with whites, Indians (who also mixed with Spaniards to form Mexicans) etc.
To be Black in America is almost an implicit acknowledgement of having non-African blood running through your veins.

Actually, I work in sports entertainment and I had to find some pics of Nicole Richie for an article I'm writing in regards to her comments about Kobe Bryant (she said she wanted to have sex with him on a Lakers broadcast on live TV when being interviewed)...that happened to bring me here.
And yes, probably my comments will fall on deaf ears, but many times you can't help whether somebody will listen. You can only put out there what sometimes needs to be said. So in the end it was just happenstance I came here.

Your comments were so eloquently stated! I feel exactly as you do. It just really makes me sad that in the year 2003 we still haven't moved past race. It really shouldn't matter what color a person is. What should matter is the character and wisdom of that person.
Every culture is special and has extraordinary aspects. We are all equals. God didn't send any of us here weak or incomplete. We are all exceptional individuals with our very own special talents.
I am a very open-minded individual. I think that alot of us forget that life is an on-going journey and there are many roads to travel. We may not always agree with one another but we atleast need to respect one another. By listening and respecting one another we will be able to give each other unique perspectives on life, balance and harmony. Most importantly, each person will be able to offer practical advice and personal wisdom that comes from living life courageously. We all learn by listening!

the reason for people stating that they look white is because of the topic at hand. Should they
be ashamed of the way they look? Wether it be african, or like a white person, it doesnt matter.
Some times you have to go to extremes to get people to understand. True , the way her tracks
were described was kinda rough, but it's the truth. I dont look mixed at all. That's not the
point being made. Nicole could very well be black and thats the point that was being made. If one
race does not understand things the way another does (for example: One person says she has nice
long blond hair, and we say, it's not her hair). Even though everyone likes to think they know
everything there is to know about a race, apparently some people dont But why not point out the
fact that it's weave if that's what's being discussed. I feel soo blessed to be black. I'm glad I
was not burdened with having to decide wether I wanted to obey my parents and hate black people
and other races. I think that black people are soo beautiful. I wouldnt change my race if God
himself asked me if I wanted to. Black people have trials and tribulations, but we handle things
differently. My mother was never worried about me bringing home a white guy. And she would love

I am a proud African American woman. I too wouldn't change my race for anything in the world. I come from a long line of strong, beautiful, educated Black women. This site just goes to show how very important education and knowledge really is. Without education and learning, wisdom doesn't exist. As a child I use to love to listen to my grandmother tell stories about overcoming diversity and the joys of trials and challenges that result in wisdom and character.
Black people as with all minority groups have had many challenges to face but those challenges have given me the power of commitment. When we honor the commitment to do whatever is necessary to nourish ourselves and others, the universe opens up to us and pours forth blessings greater than anything we ever imagined. "My point is" you get out of life what you put into it.

Most Americans are so ignorant to the real past of America. Most African-Americans are mix with "so-called white blood" The outwardly physical traits come out in many different ways. Genetics is a grab bag of physical traits from all generations before hand. The recent Storm Thurmond case is one of a long history of American denial of African-Americans who are the offsprings of white men. It speaks to the power of racism and race in this country,which is a social construct, when one denies there own child. If most Americans were to truly allow themselves learn about American history including African-American history as an important part of it, they wouldn't be suprise to see an African-American who looks so-called "white". But I guess if people who deem themselves "white" truly confronted the true origins of their whiteness in this country they wouldn't be able to deal with it. Denial keeps them safe.

I have seen pictures of Lionel Richie's wife, and they both are light complected people of African origin. To clarify the matter, Nicole was adopted by the Richies from a member of Lionel's band. Her biological father is black and her biological mother is white. So, for those of you who want to label her, she is mixed. But in the interview, the person she refers to as her mother is her adopted mother.

I'm trying to understand why if you are, say, 1/2 black and 1/2 white or even 1/4 black and 3/4 white you basically identify with being black? Aren't you just mixed? Why is it that if you have any black in you, you usually identify with the "blackness" more than the "whiteness?" I KNOW this is not really about race or skin color or whatever, I think it's about something much deeper than the color of one's skin. But why then do I keep hearing people defining themselves by their race. For example, "I'm a proud African American Woman". You seem to want race not to matter, yet on a deeper level your "race" seems to be a very important thing. Am I wrong? Aren't you still defining yourself by your race. That's the interesting thing here. Race does seem to have very significant importance in the way people identify who they are and yet at the same time we don't want race to matter. I must admit that Asad makes a good point that many white people do prejudge people of other races, depending on the kind of environment, culture and exposure to people of other races that they grew up with. But I also think it's a two-way street. We all need to learn to understand each other better and get past this illusion of race. We are all brothers and sisters from the same place in the end. The human race. I live in a pretty "white world," and I know that many white people, including myself, worry about offending African Americans because we know that the slavery history is still very much alive today in hearts and minds and probably won't go away for a long time. It is a terrible history we all must live with. But, please understand that I believe MOST white people want to understand this and want race not to matter. It's a long and difficult road on both sides, white and black. May we all find unity and understanding. Peace to everyone on this Eve before Christmas Eve. Peace to all religions. And, hope for the world as a whole.
Let's just spell this out people. What we all know is the truth behind all this anger. History has dealt people with darker skin colors a bad hand. White people/Europeans have stomped on people throughout history. And perpetuated a myth that White is better. Why has this happened? I don't know, but I think it could have gone the other way and the lighter skinned peoples could have been the oppressed. But this is the hand that history has dealt and the shockwave from this history may only be getting started, I'm afraid as you can see by these comments. Black folks trying to prove their worth, embracing their blackness, lashing out at whites, white folks feeling guilty, trying to defend that they aren't racist, or worse, being racist. The healing has only just begun. But I think there is hope. And that hope is in realizing we are all a mix of cultures and races, especially Americans, and that should bring us all closer together. As as history goes on, we will become more mixed and the differences will matter less and less. I think in the long run, in the grand scheme of things, it will all even out. sadly, racism exists in all races. ive seen african americans who are racist against darker skinned blacks. i've also seen hispanic people from the south america who are racist against puerto ricans and cubans becuz they are darker skinned. i am a mxed black women and no i dont have blond hair and blue eyes. i have brown hair brown eyes and brown skin. and when i tell people i'm mixed they are like i thought you were all black. or i ussually get this response from black women, "why didnt you come out with good hair?" All through life people who are minorities have been told that lighter is better, whiter is better. lets just face it people in this society equate white features with beauty. look at tyra,vanessa,beyonce, halle and alicia. they are all black women with very white features. especially there noses. janet jackson even got a nose job. to appeal to a white audience. for godsake there should be more black people that look black on tv that black girls can look up to.

Back in the days of segration was every other race besides white considerd colored? or were only blacks called colored. It seems like it was just a black and white issue. what about hispanics ,asians and indians and native americans. did they have to use only the colored bathrooms aswell.

These are sad truths. Our culture has set the standard for beauty as having white features. Women in general have the hardest time because as well as looking white they need to be 23 and have perfect bodies to be the ideal. Look at the women who do the news on all the cable stations. Half of them look like models. And the women who do sports - what a joke. But notice the men can be much older and don't have to look like models. This the superficial racist/sexist American culture we live in.
Attention!!!! I am trying to figure out why it is so hard for some people to realize that all "African American" Black people are biracial. It all goes back to the early 1600's when Africans (from Africa) were shipped to the United States against their will. At this time there were no White women in the U.S. so White men had sex with the Natives and African women and the African men with the Native women and thus we have African Americans that are part African, European, and Native. Europeans, Africans, and Native Americans mixed their seed and substance to produce a kaleidoscope of skin tones and features.
The color complex in the United States makes me literally want to gag! There is nothing wrong with the Black identity. As I have explained a million times, Blacks people come in a range of beautiful colors and no color being more beautiful than another. I feel that all people should be proud of their heritage; not just Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and other ethnic groups but White people too. There is a difference in being proud and thinking one is superior because of their culture and ethnicity. Being proud is good and acceptable but feeling superior because of it is racist and ignorant.

It doesnt mean that anyone on here "has no life", sure enough race is a touchy subject but we should be able to discuss it with an open mind and an adult attitude about it. With me it's not one extreme or another. I dont think that I am superior because I'm black. That's not my point. And no, not all white people are racist. Most of the post on this site are referring to the American race problem created by a powerful master who was idealistic about his home, Europe. The society he created is not as confusing as it is in the world's other communities of color.
Throughout South America the transition to white, even when it is known that you have a biracial background is easy. All it takes is a light complexion that is in the white range.
In Asia, Pakistan, India, Philippines black is not the color to success. The people in these countries have the same impressions of their black colored cousins as all other cultures trying to be accepted into the American money machine.

I and my husband both have careers. Im a successful Clinical Social Worker and my husband a Physician. I have always been very interested in racial, cultural, and sociological issues. When I was an undergrad I took several sociology electives that dealt with these very issues we are discussing.
Race in general is a very hot topic. In the Black community race and color complexes are often a major conversation piece.
Over the Christmas holiday I was discussing these very topics with my mother and her sisters. My Aunt Suzette whom is also very light skinned was telling me that after she graduated from college she was hired at an all White school as an english teacher. One day while sitting in the teachers lounge one of her fellow co-workers made a derogatory comment about Blacks not knowing my Aunt was Black. My aunt spoke up and confronted the teacher and the next day the principal told my aunt that they didn't realize she was Black and was immediately fired. My aunt could've stayed quiet but instead she spoke up in-order to preserve the integrity and respect she had for herself and her race.
Being Black is not about skin color but rather culture. Many African American have chosen not to be part of the Black race. There have been many members of my family that decided they just didn't want to be Black anymore. They go off to college and literally divorce themselves from the Black race. They reinvent themselves into a White American and usually never even tell their spouses their true racial identity. I personally think that it is very sad when a person has so low-concept of themselves that they find it necessary to divorce their family and start all over as a totally new person.
I have a cousin whom is a few years older than me that decided she was going to pass for White. She married another Black man whom was also passing for White. They had three children and the first two where White but the third was a beautiful brown skinned girl. They hired a Black maid and told everyone that the brown skinned girl belonged to the maid. They eventually gave the child up for adoption, "just how sad is that"!!!
That's awful Nicolette. It sounds like your cousin doesn't deserve to have any children if she is so shallow that she would give up her own child because of the color of her skin. Your family must have been shocked by her actions.
As for your Aunt, I certainly hope she took that case to court, if in fact she was fired based on her race. What happened there?

My family couldn't believe what had happened. It was just a very sad situation. As far as my Aunt goes, this specific incident happened back in the early 1960's when schools were still seperated by race.
