Letter from the Publisher: New Layout

Gothamist has switched to a three column layout. Main content is on the left, with supporting features and content in the middle column. On the right, you can find paid-content, like the personals section, and advertising. We've thought about making this switch for a few months- ever since we introduced the advertising on the site. Nick Denton has written a lot of good stuff about the way advertising will change weblogs and small content sites. We would argue that the three column layout is inevitable for any content site with advertising- just look at the New York Times. Anyway- EverythingNY made the switch first, and Nick moved Fleshbot, Gawker, and Gizmodo this week, so we're not setting the trend on this one- just following a good idea.

Also coming soon- Gothamist Forum. Anyway feel like doing some beta testing?

  • I've always hated left-aligned content. Now your content is left-aligned, and the important stuff is jammed all the way over.

If this layout is important for whatever reason, could you at the very least center the whole mess? Then I don't have to crane my neck to read.

    Thanks.

PS... Bellyaching aside, I love the content. : )

  • Hey! What's neat is that in IE a lot of that pesky advertising is pushed off screen if your horizontal guider is to the left.

  • looks pretty darn sharp to me guys, hot! i will see you this weenter. hope your thanksgivings went well!

  • Looks fine for me in IE, Moz, and Safari using OSX (10.2.6). The single right column on the forum's taking up as much space as the two on the regular pages, so there's a lot of unattractive white space...

Yes, progress is very hard. I constantly curse Jake about "changes" to the site, but such is life.

Ah, for the simpler days when Gothamist was fabulously informal. But we must move on.

  • Looks totally screwed up on Mozilla (non Firebird) on XP here. (Looks fine on my XP IE) But I need the tabs! Tabs!

    (XPIE!)

Christine, have you looked at the site in IE? It is nearly identical on my computer in both programs (side by side - i.e., this is probably not a browser problem).

  • King Hippo

it looks pretty messed up in MozillaFirebird on XP as well. I don't know how many of your readers use Firebird, but just an FYI...
