Positively 6th Street

2003_11_industryfood.jpg

It seems like every street in the East Village could benefit from the kind of look that the Post's Tom Sykes gives 6th Street between Avenue A and Avenue C. Here's a building by building analysis of where to eat, drink, and even work out:

94 [Avenue A]: Sidewalk Cafe
503: Gladiator Gym
505: Wonder Bar – gay, but don't worry straight gals and guys, you won't be laughed out (it's also a Gothamist favorite)
507: Oriental Grill – bargain Asian food
509: Industry (food) – "one of the few true destination restaurants in the East Village"
511: Coz – not so divey, hence not so East Villagey
520: Joe's Bar – divey

Another great part of 6th Street: The 6th Street Garden at Avenue B.

  • Yeah, Choire's info is correct. Wonder Bar hasn't been that much fun since the change in owners happened (at least there was good music before). I still pop in there every now and then just for curiosity and haven't stayed for a drink yet. The old owners, however, do have a new bar.

Last time we went to Wonder Bar, it was about 1am, and it was literally empty except for the DJ and the bartender. What was up with that???

    Nice reference in the title.

I'm a huge fan of Oriental Grill (OG) and last time I was there they told me they're changing the style, menu and name at the end of the month. They're turning into a Spanish Tapas restaurant with Basque influences! Sounds like the chef and staff will remain the same but I'll be sad to see that awesome Miso Dipping Sauce go.

  • It hasn't been that gay since it was originally sold, hmm, 7 years ago? Now the best part is that Wonder Bar's owners/renters were, it is reported, evicted, and then the landlords kept the bar open with the same name. This is second-hand, it should be noted, but still: shady.

is wonder bar even that gay anymore?
