<description>&lt;p&gt;I really love the ol&apos; &quot;I need to reach my kid in an emergency&quot; rationale for giving a kid a cell phone in school. Be honest...how many times have you really used your cell phone in an outright emergency? (No, being shitfaced and calling a car service does not qualify.) Probably not very often. Possibly never. I know I haven&apos;t. Cellular service providers have done a great job of playing the fear card. 

Land lines went out with dial-up Internet service. Come the next blackout I might need a landline, but I&apos;ll happily trade ten or 12 years of a meaningless phone bill for a day or two without communication.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
