I love the Wine Cake at Papoo's at 55 Broadway

I family member gave me the recipe, it is really nothing more than a lovely pudding cake done up with cake mixes!

Here is the recipe for those that do not want to go out for it -

cake:
1 box yellow cake mix
1 box vanilla instant pudding
4 eggs
1/2 cp veg oil
1/2 cp water
1/2 cp dry white wine (I was admonished to purchase THE CHEAPEST white wine, the types sold in jugs for this recipe)

soak:
1 stick butter
1 cp sugar
1/4 cp water
1/4 cp dry white wine

Mix all cake ingredients in bowl for five minutes. Grease and flour bundt pan. Pour mixture in. Bake at 350F for 50 minutes.

At 45 minutes:
In a small saucepan add butter, sugar, water and bring to a rolling boil. Take off of the heat add 1/4 cup of the wine.

Immediately afer removing the cake from the oven, while still hot in pan, pour soak mixture over the cake. Let sit for five minutes.

For an Amaretto Version:
Sub chocolate cake mix for white
Sub chocolate pudding mix for vanilla
Add one tsp almond extract to cake mixture
Sub 1/4 amaretto for the white wine in the soak (not cake mixture, leave wine in)

Enjoy!!!

The crepes suzette at Pastis are delicious.

I'm a fool for sundaes: The vanilla ice cream with fudge and toasted almonds at Cafe Luxembourg makes me swoon.

I'm somewhat biased, but the Provence salad at Aix was a revelation to me: celery shavings, honey (I think), honeydew melon, green tomatoes and pomegranate sauce with what can only be described as vibrant mint sorbet. Amazing combination of flavors.

And I second the key lime pie at Blue Smoke, though the sticky toffee pudding (much ballyhooed by them) was a disappointment--too much breadstuff, not enough sticky.
