Murder They Ate

The Murder Burger; Photo - NY TimesIn one area of the Bronx, there is the Murder Burger at the First Way Deli. The Times Alan Feuer investigates the meaning behind the name of this intimidating burger: "Half a pound of ground beef mixed with bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, adobo spice mix, milk, eggs and a dash of Accent seasoning cooked to succulence atop the skillet and served on a kaiser roll with onions, relish and secret sauce." Possibilities for the name:

- The deli's former owner was a killer, so later owners created this "burger homage."
- There was a killing outside the deli during the 80s.
- The burger is so good, it's murder: One customer tells Feuer, "You know how some people say, `Man, that's bad,' when they really mean it's good? Well, it's the same thing here. These burgers are so big and so good they kill you. You eat a Murder Burger and it murders you." Another says, "It kills your hunger."

The Murder Burger, plus an order of French fries and a 20-ounce drink, costs $4.25. Damn, that's cheaper than the Corner Bistro's Bistro burger, but the Corner Bistro is so conveniently located. And there's bacon. Mmm...bacon.

What's the address of Murder Burger?

  • Not familiar to the Bronx, wanna try the Murder Burger, anyone know what bus/subway do I take to get there?

  • Nothing beats Paul's Palace, on 2nd Ave just south of St. Mark's Place.

  • Smith & Wollensky's makes a good burger. I just went to Schnack for the first time last weekend and yo. It's winter - I'm SUPPOSED to get fat. Off to Murder this weekend...

  • Jen

I hear that Jeffrey Steingarten likes the $6 burger at Smith and Wollensky's Grill. I'll have to murder that some day as I work next door.

  • Do they hav ostrich like the Murder Burger in Davis? mmmm, biped meat.

  • Well, in English venacular, "murder" is slang for "devour", as in "boy, I could murder a curry right now" (New York usage could be "boy, I could murder some Daisy May's Ribs right about now").

The Fairway cafe also has a pretty darn good burger, and the outdoor cafe in Riverside Park South (which is probably closed now as it's winter) makes some tasty ground-beef patties, too.

Murder Burger in Davis is absolutely smoking... if this place here is half as good i'll be there constantly...

  • Woman : We take eighteen ounces of sizzling ground beef....

    Homer : Ooooh!

Woman : And soak it in rich, creamery butter, then we top it off with bacon, ham, and a fried egg. We call it the Good Morning Burger.

    (Homer drools)

  • i like when i'm done with my burger at the corner bistro and i look down and see that there's a piece of bacon on my plate that fell off my burger earlier, and it's a nice suprise bonus for me to eat...

  • The ingredients sound like the burger Eddie Murphy describes in Raw.

    "Better than McDonalds????"

  • There's a Murder Burger in Davis, CA, as well. Back in the day, before giving up meat, I used to eat there pretty often. It's motto: "Burgers so good they're to die for." Ha ha ha...ha......But honestly, they do serve some pretty fine cow flesh.

  • That much ground beef will induce cardiac arrest, therefore the deli is guilty of murder.

  • Paula

Or that "meat is murder" perhaps?
