Today, the eagerly-anticipated film Will-Ferrell-as-elf film, Elf, opens. Gothamist enjoyed this sweet and funny film (maybe sweeter than we'd anticipated, but still, some choice hilarious moments - go to the movie website, go to "Inner Elf" for "Elf videos" and watch any or all of the clips). We look forward to watching it on afternoons when we're blue and being cheered up by a Will Ferrell triple bill of Dick, Old School, and Elf.
Updated: Will Ferrell is the Holiday A-List Star of the Day on Amazon today! He talks about the magic of Christmas. [Thanks, Fluffel]
A.O. Scott says Elf "succeeds because it at once restrains its sticky, gooey good cheer and wildly overdoes it."

A.O. Scott also says that Will Ferrell is "poised to enter the million-dollar pop-culture doofus pantheon alongside Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey and SpongeBob SquarePants."
There are many adverbs that I could of to describe the nature of my anticipation for a Christmas-themed movie that stars yet another completely unfunny schtick-mongering SNL alumnus.
"Eager" is not among them.
gothamist, your letter to santa was great (at least the start of it). i'm sure you'll get everything you wanted.
i'm upset that a.o. scott didn't call it "the feel good movie of the year."
Will Ferrell is the Holiday A-List (gift from the stars) at Amazon.com today.
Thanks, Fluffel.
And tien - that was our 5th draft!
5th draft?!? do we get to see the rest of gothamist's letter to santa?
