Bobby D's TriBeCa hotel

David Rockwell Group's design of DeNiro's new hotelRobert DeNiro's future TriBeCa hotel will open in 2005. The six-story luxury hotel, at Greenwich and North Moore, is partially funded by the state's Liberty Bonds, which also funded Barry Diller's West Chelsea headquarters. The design was approved by the Landmarks Commission, but as if there was any doubt - it looks like everything else in that neighborhood. Ten, fifteen years ago, this would have been more exciting, but now it seems to be average in that typical upscale/downtown/new development way. Yes, it's supposed to fit in...but it could still have a little more oomph. Gothamist does like what we're hearing about the working wooden shutters and wraparound steel canopy but we can't help hoping David Rockwell is saving the magic for the interiors.

Given that everyone has to smoke outdoors these days, sidewalk canopies ought to be required in building codes for any new construction.

You can smoke at Paul Flores' cigar lounge located at 16 Maiden Lane. Now awning required.

Is nobody else outraged at the fact that DeNiro is getting a tax break to build this thing? Or that Barry Diller received one as well? It's about time we ended corporate welfare in this country.

Is it a tax break or actual financing? Financing is more offensive, since tax abatements have an expiration date.

If you really want to be outraged, check out how the city condemned buildings so the New York Times could build a new headquarters. Eminent domain, the right of the government to seize property, cannot ethically be used for private gain. And yet the gov't does it. And the New York Times has nothing to say about it, obviously.

I agree. Jake is making the Extra Extras more thick than say 3-4 bold ones.
