Redbird Fly Away

The last Redbird; Photo - NewsdayThe last Redbird train made its journey from Times Square to Shea Stadium yesterday. The old trains are being replaced by the newer high-tech trains. Newsday reports that MTA chairman that the new trains that will have "air conditioning and announcements that can be understood...As we say goodbye to this car, keep in mind it's going to be replaced by something much better." The Times covers the feelings of train buffs, MTA workers, and reporters, as well as the occasional oblivious New Yorker to this discrete area of interest ("If that's what they enjoy, that's what they enjoy") and lots of trivia. We had forgotten that Redbird walls are laced with asbestos.

I have to admit I'm a fan of the refridgerator-esque R142's and R143's with their soothing announcements and scratch-proof windows. Still I'm going to miss the Redbirds (the fastest trains. ever!) and those Blade Runner-looking R40 slant nose rustbuckets.
