Train of Cellphone-in-Toilet Terror

Train of Toilet TerrorThe desperate attachment to his cellphone led a man to desperate lengths yesterday. But the situation was rather desperate as well: Bronx resident Edwin Gallart dropped his cellphone into the toilet of a Harlem line Metro-North train during the evening rush hour. Gallart then tried to retrieve the phone, only to get his arm stuck. Only after a Metro-North supervisor, various rescue crews, three sets of power tools (including, as the Times reports, the jaws of life), and one ripped-from-the-wall then sliced toilet later was Gallart's arm set free. Other trains needed to be rerouted and a number of commuters were inconvenienced. And the phone was not found, but as M-N facilities director Al Cecere said, "you wouldn't want to put that on your face afterwards anyway."

We've dropped a pager into a toilet and a friend dropped a cellphone into the urinal. Rule number one: Let the device dry out.

Last I heard, the MTA may sue the guy

Reminds me (as most things do) of that episode of the Simpsons where Homer gets his hands stuck in two vending machines trying to get freebies and the cops/firemen were about to amputate his arms to get him out when one of them peers into the machine and asks, "are you still holding onto the can?" We then see Homer walking away sheepishly, arms intact, the firemen pointing and laughing at him.

i think that drying out the phone is the least of his concerns. and that better be a damn expensive cell phone.

the guy should have to at least pay for the toilet.

The MTA might sue him? Interesting! Sue him for stupidity? Sue his parents for not teaching common sense? Couldn't the man sue the MTA or the toilet manufacturer for emotional stress? Why stop there, why not sue the cell phone maker for creating a phone that is too slippery to control? Sue the universe's creator for creating water? It's endless sueing fun!

That is a really good Simpsons.

Our friend Tom dropped his cellphone in the urinal at a Denver restaurant. Then he proceeded to rinse it.

i dropped a phone in a toilet once in a bar in SF...and i left it there.

Man, if I lost a cell phone in a train toilet I would certainly not go after it. Those things are nasty. However, I think I would be unable to resist the temptation to call it a few times before I got the service shut off. Preferably right after I saw people go into said bathroom.

"Train in Vain" -- that is hilarious. Almost makes me want to but a cheap cell phone and try that out!

I do not have a cellphone and it never occurred to me that people could accidentally drop one in there.

That must be one interesting moment in the person's mind, thinking about the personal value of the cell versus what has passed through its new neighborhood.
