Dave Eggers Panders to Harvard Students

Dave Eggers, HeartbreakerLiterary hipster Dave Eggers spoke at Harvard and gave his thoughts on the state of Major League Baseball:

“I fucking hate the Yankees,” Eggers offered at one point, winning raucous applause. “It seems like IBM is fielding a baseball team.”

Eggers, you're just bitter because Magowan got rid of Dusty Baker. Go sell some pirate stuff.

IBM? A mega corporation, yes, but no longer the dominant beast that it once was so I'm not sure where he was going with the analogy beyond simple pander.

What the hell does Eggers know? Did he watch every game this season? Does he know what it is to play in NY? Does he understand the fact that great players often fall apart once they wear pinstripes? Does he understand that being a Yankee is all about having Heart?! Doesn't he understand that this is why so many guys fail in NY?!
Furthermore, it's so easy to bash the Yanks (at Harvard no less) it's alost a cliche and I find it infuriating. If he's going to bash something - how about the tired literary establishment of which HE -despite all the bullshit rhetoric -- is the unofficial 'hipster' golden child?! Someone needs to tell Eggers to shut his heartbreaking trap as he's quickly becoming staggeringly annoying.

That's an old, tired, cliched criticism of the Yankees. Can't Eggers at least be original in why he dislikes the squad? Do you think he actually watches games or just feels intutively that it's cool to be anti-Yankee?

Eggers thinking to himself -- 'Hey I'm speaking at Harvard. I need something good to say. Gotta warm up the crowd... hmm... I know... I'll say Yankees suck! And follow it up with some corporate reference so everyone will cheer. I am so clever! Hey, I'm a genius!'

Is that the Golden Gate Bridge in the background? Next to the ego produced goiter?
Same size?

I will say my final peace and then I will take a cleansing breath and get back to work...

Baseball is, and always will be about Hope. It's about the crack of the ball against a bat and the feeling we get as the ball sails through the air carrying our own dreams along with it. And Most of all it's about the unattainable wish that inside the eternal green field of the mind - the summer will never end.
To dwell on anything else only takes away from the sublime beauty of the game...

"Does he understand the fact that great players often fall apart once they wear pinstripes?"

He probably does. If he's like most people outside of New York, chances are he loved watching the Yankees and "Captain Jetes" fall apart to the wild card Marlins this year.

Oh, and he probably loved watching them spit up the lead -- and the Series -- to the D-Backs in 2001...

Here's to seeing the Yanks fall apart *every* year, just to show Dave Eggers how wrong he is!

I am shocked, shocked to find Dave-Eggers-bashing going on! And in a New York-based blog! This one was lobbed in there so fat, even Jason Giambi could hit it.

kristen, are you for real?
or was that some "field of dreams" outtake too hokey for even that movie...

Kristen,

Marry me.

Yours,
Michael

Michael,
If only I were available...
Kristen

I would imagine he is a Cubs fan, though, yes? Thus happy for Baker's move?
