Mayor Bloomberg says he's going to end "corporate welfare" in order to avoid giving tax breaks and subsidies companies to entice them to stay in NY - when they would never really consider leaving NY in the first place. One critic points out the city just gave Pfizer $46 million in tax breaks to stay in the city. A mayoral aide says the Pfizer deal is kosher, as Pfizer is going to make an investment in NY as well as bring in 2,000 jobs. Invest in NY with Zoloft and Viagra? The Mayor plans on making us so even-keeled or happy that we'll vote for him. Very clever, Bloomby, very clever. But we still think you're going to get beat up by the other CEOs when you go to the secret club.

The cynic in me says that this is just a stunt. Name a big employer in NYC (especially any of the Wall Street firms) and chances are they already have a corporate retention deal in place. They last for over 10 years, so most all the deals Rudy signed up are still in place. They are few new deals to give.
Still, I think Mike is trying to do the right thing.
Why is it, though, that people are more attracted to the pandering policians than the ones who just quietly get the job done competently? Mike's ratings in the polls are only just now recovering as he does more of this showboating, baby kissing, etc.
I like the fact that Mike doesn't showboat. He understands that it's more important to simply do a good job than hold press conferences and pat himself on the back over every little thing. For all the people who hate the politics of being a politician, this should be welcomed.
I guess that is the point I was inartfuly trying to make. I too like that Mike just takes care of business -- even though (or, maybe especially when) he is not actually taking care of business here and is instead trying to make sure that these big businesses pay their way in the city.
I could do without all the grandstanding.
I also think that Mike's ratings are now on the rise not so much because he is doing more grandstanding, but because the Yanks are in the Series. His popularlity as mayor probably has a lot to do with how people generally feel about the city, and people here feel better when the Yanks are winning.
