Baseball Brawl Continues and Sockgate

Don Zimmer, wearing his Cliff Huxtable sweater

With rain postponing yesterday's Game 4 of the Yankees-Red Sox ALCS, the Yankees and Red Sox mull the nutty antics from Saturday, as fines were levied against Yankees Karim Garcia and Don Zimmer and Red Sox Manny Ramirez and Pedro Martinez. Both front offices of the teams did their share of fingerpointing. Even Mayor Bloomberg got into the act, saying Martinez should have been arrested for pushing Zimmer: "If that happened in New York we would have arrested the perpetrator. Nobody should throw a 70-year-old man to the ground, period. You start doing that pretty soon you're going to throw a 61-year-old man to the ground, and I have a big vested interest in that. You just cannot assault people, even if it's on a baseball field."

However, Don Zimmer, who was trying to get in Martinez' face on Saturday, cried as he apologized in a press conference, "I'm embarrassed for what happened last night. I'm embarrassed for the Yankees, the Red Sox, the fans, the umpires and my family."

Mayor Bloomberg Yankees up his look; Photo - NY TimesSockgate: Mayor Bloomberg, purported Yankee fan, was spotted at yesterday's Columbus Day parade wearing RED socks. An aide noted this and soon Mayor Bloomberg was sporting tan socks at the Hispanic Day Parade later. Times reporter Michael Cooper notes that a Yankees cap had to be taken from the Mayor's companion, Diana Taylor, for the Mayor to wear, plus this awesome fashion note that must be revisted during the mayoral elections: The Mayor coordinates his socks to the country whose parade he's marching in (Israel and Greece, blue socks; thus, Italy, red socks).

And maybe everything does boil down to Bennifer: The on-off couple were at Saturday's game, and one would guess Ben (with unfortunate facial hair) was rooting for the Sox and Jenny was supporting the other Bronx boys from the block.

I thought Pedro did a pretty good job handling the situation. Whether it's a young ballplayer or an old fart, he's got to protect himself. He didn't take a swing or drop a shoulder...he kept Zimmer at arm's length and made sure the old man didn't hurt him. If it was anybody BUT Zimmer I think Pedro would have handled the situation differently (more violently). Zimmer screwed up by rushing him in the first place. What a fool. Being of old age shoudln't get him off the hook.

P.S. Nice Finger Eleven ads.

well, there is history for zimm. he was hit in the head when he was a player (twice i believe) and was hospitalized because of it. he even has a steel plate in his head. that said, it was still wrong of him.

some news source said that the boston police was going to issue summonses to jeff nelson and karim garcia for the fight in the bullpen.

and is it me, or does ben look very boston in that photo.

oh, and the baseballs to the head was the reason why zimm retired.

This whole deal is fascinating to an out-of-stater with no vested interest in either of these teams. I have never seen such a ridiculous display of provincial tribalism (And I am from Wisconsin!). The best part is, that with all of the players/coaches who have played for either team at one point (Zimmer & Clemens) the entire thing is almost comically incestuous;like a deadly love triangle with two brothers fighting over who gets to sleep with the sister.

In lieu of the direction this series is taking, my suggestion is that the commissioner invoke the little known MLB Medieval rules. In Medieval rules the winners team gets to loot the homes of the losers as well as have their way with their wives and girlfriends.

When Jen+Ben realized the cameras were on the, Jen leaned over and gave Ben a kiss. He seemed bored, at best, and waved the camera away.

I just think it's ridiculous that the NY papers are trying to fry Pedro for throwing at someone(which he obviously did) when Clemens does it regularly. Mike Piazza for instance...
I thought the rainout would cool everything out but it seems it just gave the papers one more day to talk about it...

Is that Mark Wahlberg next to Affleck?
