Dirty Little Secrets

2003_10_radiohead.jpgThe Post kicks off Radiohead's two nights at Madison Square Garden by talking to people who hate Radiohead but have been afraid to admit it because Radiohead are critically beloved and "cool." An entertainment editor says, "Hating Radiohead is the hipster's dirty little secret," and Spin writer Chuck Klosterman, though a fan, can understand the hate as well. "There's definitely now a symbolic value to saying you hate Radiohead - even Kid Rock makes a big deal about hating Radiohead. He even has a video where he's literally using toilet paper with the word 'Radiohead' embossed on it." Kid Rock? Using Kid Rock in an argument about hating Radiohead is like knowing Brett Ratner hates David Lynch - it doesn't matter at all.

The Post also looks at other things people won't admit they dislike:
* Marc Jacobs
* Gramercy Tavern
* The Matrix (both movies)
* Foam on frou-frou restaurant plates
* The Dalai Lama
* Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
* Jazz
* The Sopranos
* Shakespeare

Yay for arbitrary lists! Gothamist would like to add Howard Dean, Sesame Street, and The West Wing.

    Whats wrong with radiohead? I mean they're recent albums have been very experimental but at least they are experimenting. Here we are embracing bands for thier 'retro' sound when all it is is just lazy guitar playing and plegerism from 80s record collections? and since we're on the subject Shakespeare was great but we've made him to be this epic genius he isnt quite and thats why people hate him...thats all ur list is compiled of really, a list of things that have recieved a hellava lotta hype

    If someone is making their decisions about what to listen to by finding out if it's "cool" or not then they are probably not the best candidates for RH fans. If someone doesn't like their music that is their opinion, but I think that when an amazing pianist, such as Christopher O'Riley takes the time to transcribe 15 of RH's songs into piano scores and record an album of them that you can't deny that RH's music has not made a significant impact. Whether you only like pre-Kid A RH, or you only like Creep, or you can't stand them, you have to admire that there are bands out there playing music that will be around much longer than anything Limp Bizkit or Avril Lavigne has put out. Of course, anyone who likes RH knows that pop has been dead for a long time.

  • As a Radiohead fan I was rather irked by this article. But, to each his own. Say what you like about Radiohead. Won't put a damper on my fun when the next album/tour rolls around.

  • I hate Radiohead. I am no hipster. I think most of my hatred comes from previously loving them so much. Their first 3 albums: genius. Their next 3 albums: crappola. And with said crappiness came the pretencious documentary 'Meeting People is Easy' where we learned how hard it was to be a big band making big money and travelling around the world. Oh how my heart broke to see poor Thom leaning on the window of an airplane being rich and famous. And another thing: their idiotic politics that they constantly feel the need to share (like their fantastic, sensitive email around Sept.2001 saying that they didn't need an American with oil on his hands protecting them from the world. Great, I think that wasn't an issue since they live in BRITAIN.) Shut the fuck up and play music from the Bends, you twats.

    I thought that article from the post was awesome! because it's true, a lot of people pretend to like radiohead just to make people think they're cool. But the only people that are annoyed by that more than the post are actual radiohead fans! If the trend described in that article is true, soon all the posers will be filtered out. I'm cheering here, who's with me?

    kid rock once mentioned how big of fan he is of hank williams. if hank jr. singing monday night football didn't give hank sr. the dirt nap blues then kid rock certainly did.

    Thank god someone else hates the dalai lama. Oh sure he's all nirvana-ed out, but i would be too if richard gere were up my---well you get the idea.

  • Hydro Hummer

    To further 'wonderful's' comment, I doubt Kill Bill is going to be the get out of jail free card that Quentin was hoping for. And since so many critics are proudly and loudly resuscitating their hate for Quentin, I think he and Bill have no place on the closeted hate list.

    I personally hate the Murakami Louis Vuitton bags. Why stick a great visual artist with a tired old logo on an ugly white leather surface? White leather, like Carmela's Roche Bobois couches... I like my Murakami straight up, on a canvas tote, no uber-corporate fashion conglom muddying the view.

    What's hip about Radiohead? Messy hair and high camera angles?

  • Jen

    I personally love Sesame Street. I was just, you know, pulling stuff out of the air to cause some trouble is all. But I am pretty eh about Dean (now that there's Clark) and very eh about The West Wing (now that Amy is back).

  • wonderful

    finally! oh how i love this list, but i think there is something missing...friendster.

    that has to be the least hip thing ever. so glad to see the dalai lama and the matrix on the post's list and howard dean on gothamist's.

    before someone throws rotten tomatoes at me, i want to add kill bill.

  • ermay

    you should add hermes

  • eli

    I'm not afraid to hate on all those things. Especially the Dalai Lama.

  • Mase

    Sesame Street was a dislike, not a hate.

    For me, add the movie "The Piano." ugh.

  • Hate Sesame Street?? For shame.
