It'll be a while before we see Tim Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, but till then, there is Big Fish, about a young man trying to understand his dying father's life (more at Greg's Movie Preview). Albert Finney plays the father, with Ewan McGregor playing the father as a young man, and Billy Crudup as the son; Jessica Lange and Alison Lohman play the mother at different ages. And from the looks of the new trailer, it definitely looks beautiful and odd.
Big Fish opens in New York on December 10.

i read this book a few years back, actually when i first moved to nyc. very very excellent, and that's coming from someone who was still dealing with his father's death when reading the book.
i'm quite intrigued by the movie...
dare i have high hopes?
It looks interesting as Tim Burton films are. However, 2 problems.... One, southern accents spoken by British actors. Yeesh! They sound like British actors doing southern accents. Robert Duvall said that there should be a law that only Southerners can speak southern accents. And I wholeheartedly agree. Second, the screenwriter wrote "Go" and both of the Charlie Angels movies, which are just pop culture crapola. Big Fish appears to be a whimsical and dramatic movie. One can't insert an ass-slapping dance number or superficial Gen-X self-referential sarcasm to keep the narrative moving in this movie.
god--the scripts for go and both angels movies were terrible, as far as any kind of narrative value is concerned. i'm scared for tim--it's been downhill since mars attacks!
y'all, greencine daily just posted a number of links about butchered southern accents in film:
