Brooklynites Get 'Zined

Brooklyn gets two new magazines: One, BKLYN, looks like something perfect for multi-culti yuppies on in Park Slope (okay, maybe that's the idea Gothamist gets from the cover, but wouldn't you?), whereas the other, NRG, seems just right for hip and politically motivated Clinton Hill and Fort Greene residents. According to the Times, the first issues of the magazines include:

BKLYN - advice to Brooklynites from the Park Slope writer Jill Eisenstadt about how to persuade Manhattan friends to cross the bridge for dinner parties (answer: give up; it can't be done), and a boyhood reminiscence by the novelist Jonathan Lethem
NRG - thprofile of Erykah Badu, soul music diva and Fort Greene resident, and an interview with City Councilman James E. Davis that took place shortly before he was fatally shot at City Hall in July

Gothamist looks forward to checking out both magazines, especially NRG which is more a grassroots effort by Fort Greene resident Gail Johnson.

  • I'm with at203: it's the same with L magazine, which assumes the hell train goes no further than Metropolitan-Lorimer ...

I got a copy in the mail three weeks ago. The layout and paper reminded me of "Jane" magazine. From the content of this first issue, I'm wondering if Brooklyn, for the editors, will ever grow to include more that Park Slope, Fort Greene, Carroll Gardens, Williamsburg and Brooklyn Heights. I'll hold out for the article about the quaintness of Canarsie or the graffiti of East New York.

  • Hmm. I saw BKLYN the last time I was at the Brooklyn Museum. It was weird...I thought that it was just one of those promo "Welcome to Our Neighborhood" magazines that float around every so often...
