The beautiful Eero Saarinen designed TWA terminals at J.F.K. Airport, closed two years ago when TWA closed, may be repoening, with Jet Blue operating out of it. The Times reports that Jet Blue would build a terminal behind the Saarien building, and the two buildings would be linked together by tunnels, last seen in Catch Me If You Can.
However enthusiastic JetBlue, the Municipal Art Society (who believes that the buliding's future lies best as a functioning terminal), or New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission may be, the Port Authority does not feel the whole building can be a modern terminal with "no room for curbside check-in, no way to move baggage efficiently through the building and no place to put security equipment like bulky explosive-detecting devices...the gently arched tubular bridges do not meet modern requirements for people with disabilities." But PA does say it could become an airport centerpiece, pending the future AirTain system, as well as a place for the aiport's employees.
Gothamist hopes that the terminal can reopen, as it's a glorious memory of what air travel used to be like when it was glamorous and exciting, versus the tension-fraught chore it seems now. However, we're not happy with JetBlue's disclosure they are giving passenger information to the government.

eeros father, eliel designed the central rail staton here in helsinki. an amazing building just like the twa terminal.
i was in the twa terminal once, and i had a camera with me but i never got the courage to take a pic walking down the tunnell. i still regret it.
anyway, saarinen is finnish for "islandy". useless info there.

family history:
Eero's son died in one of the worst pile-ups in motorcycle racing history. He was one of the most gifted riders of that era, and after the accident the track was closed for over 20 years, only to be reopened a few years ago...
ack.. jetblue is part of the government conspiracy? it's a good thing that they aren't serving food or they could inform the gov on who is vegetarian, too!
I like that: saarinen = islandy
well, saari is island, and the "nen" ending in finnish words could mean many things, including the -ing. i could go on for hours cos im studying finnish at the moment and i like to ramble on about all the finnish cases and ending and things like that.
for example, if you were to talk about the saarinen family in finnish, you would say "saariset". if you were to say "saarinen's building" you would say "saarisen rakennus".
more random finnish information there.

I wish that someone would come up with some design concepts for what they plan to do with the twa terminal. I propose that they enlarge both flight wings and add modern jetways. I still dont know how they will add the newer security equippment because the origional terminal is so small. By the way I visited the terminal last year and was surprised at how small it was. It looks alot bigger in pictures. the building also looked like it was painted over with an off white concrete paint. I am glad that Jet Blue has decided to use the terminal I am eager to see how they will transform it to meets todays travel needs
This is a great design. An even bigger and more daring one should be built behind it, since someone has mentioned that it is smaller than it looks in pictures. New owner 'Jet Blue,' no doubt, is proud. I travelled through JFK a few years back and wasn't able to stop and look inside it. Is the bldg. already on the list of historical landmarks? If not, it should be.
