I think the MTA's policy of not replacing or reimbursing $70-monthly metrocards paid with cash via a vending machine is completely ridiculous, especially when one still has the receipt! I mean, all the information is listed on that receipt to research when the card was last used. When I called MTA customer service, a rep named Ms. Allen told me verbatim, "You are just out of luck". That shows me that the MTA has no compassion for everyday riders of the subway.

It's taking a loooong time to get in touch with a rep who can get back to me. I left two messages and they still didn't get back to me. Also they should have a system that works like a site to access; maybe providing the Name :MEM#,Auth#, Ref#, Serial # on the receipt. Log in these numbers will be easier for us commuters to report our claim.

wordgirl:

the insurance is automatic upon purchase with credit, debit, or ATM card ... and the $5 fee only applies for your SECOND (and FINAL) claim allowed per calender year.

Now there is a Murphy's Law issue with Metrocard purchases. If I DON'T buy the insurance, I will surely lose my card but if I DO buy the insurance, I will never lose it again. As if we all needed MORE things to worry about.

I don't understand how people lose Metrocards so easily. If you can manage to keep track of your driver's license and your credit cards, then this should be just as easy.

This is only a month too late! Last week, I lost a 30-day card only 10 days after I bought it (with a credit card, nonetheless)....

What's shitty about this isn't the two-a-year provision, though... it's the total lack of protection for the masses who buy through Transitcheck. We're people too, dammit!
