Renewable Brooklyn Concert

2003_9_renewable.jpgThe Renewable Brooklyn concert is this Saturday, 3-10PM at the Prospect Park Bandshell. Renewable Brooklyn's mission is to take "the immense creative talent, spirit and energy in New York City and focus it toward creating a more sustainable way of living. One that links health, home and industry in cooperation for the community as a whole. The goals are to promote intelligently designed, non-toxic, non-polluting practices that use renewable resources and inspire the people who live in the five boroughs to become more environmentally conscious and active."

Lest you think the concert is an afterthought, the line up includes Out Hud, 2 Many DJ's, Radio 4, UNKLE, and Dan the Automator's Head Automatica and Handsome Boy Modeling School projects, one of the best line-ups for any concert this year, as New York Magazine says. Also, Brooklyn Brewery is selling organic beer, Two Boots has an organic menu, fair-trade coffee from Gorilla Coffee, and power from wind generators!

Of course, as with pretty much all things music these days, Coolfer told us about it first.

lest you *think* the concert is an afterthought...?

Nitpicks aside, I hadn't heard about this. It looks like an excellent(and worthy) show. Chances are I will be attending. Thanks, gothamist.

I'd love to see too many DJ's.

Their last bootleg was warm and fuzzy.

Thanks for the heads-up - you're the best!!!

One good musical turn deserves another, so in a moment of shameless self-promotion, I'd like to let you know I'll be dj'ing this Thursday at Blah Blah Lounge in Park Slope. While I'm no James Lavelle, it should be a fun time. If anyone happens to be in the Slope Thursday....

user-pic

I don't think I've seen a concert promoted less in quite some time. Not even a poster in the window at Gorilla Coffee in Park Slope, one of the places where tickets can be purchased.

Jen, you're gonna get some good renewable energy karma for helping promote this thing.

no promotion? check out...

new yorker magazine. new york magazine. time out NY (4 mentions). village voice. mad listserves AND posters in gorilla coffee and southpaw.

shut the hell up and buy a ticket already, hater.

BklynQn, I think what Coolfer meant was that ads in magazines aside, it's surprising there aren't more posters on walls and scaffolding. Posters at Southpaw and Gorilla Coffee, that's expected, but it seems too good a concert to only have those vehicles for advertising.

Did anyone notice that 2 Many DJ's are no longer listed on the website as a performer? Also, despite what is listed on othermusic.com and in NY Magazine, there is no mention of UNKLE on the website either.

I'm still going, but I wonder if all the acts are as solid as it seems.

Posters say lineup is subject to change.

Handsome Boy, Head Automatica, Arthur Baker, Richard Fearless, Out Hud, Soviet, Radio 4, Airborn Audio and Echo are all totally 100 percent confirmed. Special guests may be in attendance.

user-pic

Of course the lineup is subject to change and those bands performing are all incredible - I can't wait!

But everyone is talking about the chance to see UNKLE and 2 MANY DJ'S in the park. The promoters talked about using the lineup to get "non-activists" to come out and see what the cause is all about. Now the two most widely recognized names on the bill are gone. People who bought tix expecting to see those two bands are going to be disappointed.

I am officially hating Handsome Boy Modeling School for the crappy "show" they did this weekend. They were the last ones on --didn't take the stage until 9:15... and they just stood on stage for a half hour drinking wine while this freaky guy in a bathrobe named Silky LaRue dragged audience members on stage, made fun of their clothes and sang to them. Then MC Paul Barman came on stage and rhymed for about 90 seconds. The whole un-entertaining spectacle took about 30 minutes. Then they said "We're Handsome Boy Modeling School -- goodnight everyone!" and walked off the stage. It was so disappointing.

Granted, it was rainy and cold, and the two top acts had been taken off the bill, and they did a crap-ass job of promoting this show -- and there were MAYBE 100 people left at this late hour... but I think it's so crappy that HBMS wouldn't perform. I mean, the people still there were their FANS! Why else would we be huddling and shivering. Really shitty of them, I think.

Sorry -- I just have to get this bee out of my bonnet about this show. I was so disappointed about HBMS because I love them, and they are hilarious. But a few more things bugged me about this show.

>> Despite the hype, there was no organic beer from Brooklyn Brewery in organic corn cups. There was no organic beer. Just Brooklyn Brewery selling their regular stuff at $5 a pop in regular plastic cups, which I might add, were strewn about the lawn.

>> Your price of admission got you a 64-page book, printed on environmentally-friendly paper with enviro-friendly ink. The book contains ideas and art about "renewing Brooklyn." Half the pages were images, and contained no information. However -- does anyone else think that actually producing a book is not exactly the most enviro-friendly thing you can do? Why not put it on a website, which creates no extra paper (enviro-friendly or not?)

I won't bemoan the admission price, because it was a full day of music. I'm guessing they took a huge loss on it, because there were probably 200 people there, and it look like they had planned for more. It's a good idea, just bad execution.

I have to agree with at203. Expectations were sky-high. The weather played a part but the promotion on this show was awful. It doesn't matter how many places you advertise - if you only start the week before, you can't effectively generate interest.

I would say the art exhibit was poorly "curated." None of the exhibits were put into context as to how they might contribute to the idea of a "renewable" Brooklyn.

There were some good points. I really enjoyed Hed Automatica. And watching Richard Fearless on stage was amusing to say the least, especially when he left the decks to go find a light for his cigarette.

It's too bad this show was such a mess. With better promotion and actual performances by the bands, this should easily have been one of the best shows of the year.
