Mayor Bloomberg has announced the creation of a committee to investigate how to make Coney Island a year-round attraction. Some of the ideas include, "seaside amphitheater for concerts; a world-class paddleball, volleyball and handball complex, and a water adventure park with heated water for the colder months" as well as a ferry from Manhattan to Coney Island. The goal, as Bloomberg states, is to make sure Coney Island's economy can be sustained year round and not be seasonally driven.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz asks us to put on our imagination hats: "Imagine a Boardwalk lined with even more restaurants, clubs and cafes with music, great food and dancing. Imagine that it's Saturday night and the only place everyone wants to be is in Coney Island." This would be a change from heading to Coney Island on a Saturday night because we've passed out on the F-train and missed our stop.

Ha, passed out on the F-train...
The only time I've been out that far was indeed, when I passed out on the F train. I then vomited on the platform, got back on the train, and passed out again.
And now I can do it all year long!? Gee, Bloomberg: Thanks!
did anyone see the vh1 special that followed ODB after he got out of jail? the first place he wanted to eat was a clam shop in coney island. ODB, now Dirt McGirt, is cool.
Many New Yorkers, at one time or another, have had the same thought during the colder months: "I bet Coney Island is beautiful this time of year"...
Then, armed with their super-eight cameras and love for vintage Americana, made the journey to the spookily deserted, icy shore.
They have all made the same discovery. Coney island IS beautiful that time of year. And FUCKING COLD. Though the thought may be lovely, Coney Island will never be the only place to be on a Saturday night in February. I'm afraid no amount of good intentions and heated water parks will change the sad fact that during the winter, Coney Island is so cold as to be inhospitable to human life.
Don't worry folks, you don't have to worry about getting to Coney by passing out on the F train, since it doesn't GO there now, thanks to extensive MTA track work. If they were so worried about Coney's economy, maybe they wouldn't have shut down most transportation there for the past year and change.
As you all have pointed out, there's virtually no way to get to Coney Island without risking serious illness or death. It is beautiful all the time. People have a quasi-mystical attraction to the place, the natural environment and the built environment. It would develop itself, and maintain all of its graceless charm, if people could get there quickly and easily. I like that ferry idea.
How about casinos? If Bloomberg can help outlaw smoking in restaurants and bars, surely he can help NYC get indoor gambling to rival Atlantic City. Just make sure those patrons stay outside to smoke in the freezing blustering cold!
I grew up in Brooklyn an I have spent sometime in Coney Island in the winter.
I agree with FDL It's freakin' cold!! Not just cold, blustery winds that go right through you.
Mayor Mike, I suggest we cover it in a huge dome. If that does not improve the year round economy, it will be a great place to keep the homeless or perhaps an intern camp for smokers.
